That's it for today. Any ideas for what to try next? I think slightly thicker pads would add some sub bass and highs and comfort.

I just want call out @cameng318 on this because he’s already designed 3D printer baffles for the YH/HP-1. I have a pair and they are nicely made. Haven’t tried them yet.

Wool vs felt, which looks better? I didnt get instant sense of fast and lean with felt like I did with wool. Byproduct of less highs or less damped? Difficult to measure and comfort sucks. Not a fun mod. Leaving as-is for RD comparison, then sell. Preference+discount to whomever continues modding and sharing.

The file is available here. I was drawn into amplifiers lately, and I haven't done enough work with my HP-1. Extending the baffle changes the sound a lot, and it really needs some good pads. I think the dimensions still needs to be optimized. When I'm done with the amps I'm working on, I'll probably come back and play with my HP-1 more. Perhaps I'll come up a better version in the summer.

I think a round baffle is all it needs. More pad options then and better acoustics and smaller chamber.

Smaller enlosure? That can be met while adding anti-resonance materials like butyl. YH-2 stock is pleasant enough but Id like to add some transparency. Yamaha easier to right with mods as you all mentioned before when compared to Fostex.

YH-2 in nice condition. Is the sound comparable to new? If so, then serious missed potential.

All came out cleanly and intact. The material in back of cups covering the vents is felt. And the gross colored foam is hardened some from being compacted and aged. Only part that didnt come off cleanly was one spot on foam which was probably where it was originally glued on to back of driver.

Mod1: Butyl around driver edge to adhere to baffle. Craft felt adhered with glue to back of driver.

I forgot how heavy these little drivers are. Its like a oreo made of metal. Damplifier not going to do anything but may help with thin plastic enclosure (later).

The felt on back of driver may not have a good air tight seal because of the wiring. Will inspect for gaps.

According to this basic explanation, to increase tension is to get more highs. I can do this by damping / increasing air pressure. Damping requires reducing airflow by fill materials / reduction of enclosure size. Increasing tension I imagine means more extension both ways. I’m sure there are a ton more variables and side effects. Anyways, mega damping is the mission. Side missions: absorption and resonance control.

@rhythmdevils box of goodies arrived today. Measurements and first impressions probably not until tomorrow. Fun!

Edit: I may have misunderstood the basic explanation. Maybe increasing tension they mean like increasing tension on a string instrument - they mean to wind the diaphragm tighter. I am making it less able to move freely by damping with air pressure, but I cant tighten the string. Sorry if this is basic speaker 101 design, I newb.

That response looks great. My YH-2 mod will basically be same as everyone's, fill up enclosure with some stuff + small variables. In the end I will probably just use your mod guide again @dBel84 but try to execute perfectly this time.

First impression: Bass light and sometimes lean. Some extra treble that sounds like extra detail dependent on song, but on others it's not good. Not my preference.

I took notes before measuring. Ill post those notes later. I am about to get busy for awhile so just throwing this up here for now.

Disclaimer: L/R imbalance is not true. These were quick measures, I will try again. gtg

Forgot to add that HP-1a did sound more detailed in mids/highs with better definition. Anisotropic magnets are more powerful.

The extra detail from treble was noted because when I first put on the YH-1 I was like, "Yeah, rd's teased out the extra speed and detail from this driver", then soon realized the highs were just bright and the bass light. Weak lows made the headphone's boring and effected male vocals at times. HP-1 was interesting for there was what seemed like real definite detail improvement over YH-1 that I could hear in guitars and vocals, cymbals too sounded more defined.

The HP-1a has perfect pads and YH-1 has rough pads.

Just quick summary while I have a second.

Edit: HP1a easier to make out individual details like backing vocals etc.

This is always the balance with damping orthos

The more damping you apply, typically the more linear they become and as a result, the more studio-like or reference monitor you end up with. At the same SPL, lower frequencies are going to sound more tame and mid-upper and high frequencies will dominate. This ALL relates to how loud you typically listen as it accommodates our natural hearing frequency response. I have not heard these particular headphones from RD but have listened to the RP18 and HE6. At low SPL ( I listen very softly compared to most ~ 60dB ish) the bass is not basshead deep but it is present and unobtrusive. When I crank the volume up, I can listen / tolerate much higher SPLs than I normally would and they are clean sounding with powerful bass lines.

I may have to jump on the tour to hear how they compare to my own YH1/YH100
