I bought Imaginary Appalachia and loved it. So I picked up Songs of the Plains. It's not bad, but it lacks the originality of Imaginary Appalachia.

Anyone know if any of his other albums are more like Imaginary Appalachia?

    Thanks,
    Jeff.

(In this vein the kind of stuff I like would include Tarbox Ramblers and Hillstomp, if that gives you any idea of what I'm looking for.)

    Jeff,

I think you’ll have to regard Colter’s albums as their own animals so to speak. He’s a young man finding his voice. If there is a through-line in his albums its one of authenticity. Although I didn’t particularly enjoy Imaginary Appalachia, it shared a consistent sound with the two following albums.

Western Swing and Other Punchy Songs also makes a ton of sense for him if you’ve every experienced a small town dance with a live band. This one required a few listens to grow on me.

Awesome! His discography is a mess because he wasn’t a commercial success so people kept re releasing his music trying to make it sell. So there are lots of repetitive albums out there.

here are the original, non repetitive, essential albums to get by Townes Van Zandt:

The Late Great Townes Van Zandt
The High Low, and in Between
For The Sake of the Song
    Delta Momma Blues
    Our Mother The Mountain
    Flyin Shoes

they are all so good! My favorite songwriter of all time.

I’ll do a post on my blog about Townes Van Zandt with links to bandcamp and streaming services soon.

Glad to see Colter Wall seeing more widespread success. I attribute it to a few of his tracks being featured in mainstream movies and tv series. He is local to me in a very small market so it has been easy to follow his rise. I swear he must have smoked a cigar a day from the age of 5. If you hear his voice and see a photo of him you'd never think there is any relation.
