I am among those too lazy to change fuses in audio gear unless they need replacement but If needs be I follow this guideline:

Tapping it around with a rubber mallet for a few minutes is equivalent to many hours actual running. Don't use a hammer unless you want to actually break it in.

    Get the sonagestic seasurch catalogue.

He's probably not worth the effort (see what I did there?) to give him a title, but I vote for "Fuse Whisperer".

I think you are referring to "percussive maintenance".

I can't say I am a fuse roller per se, only that I have heard the effects of swapping them. but I hold the opposite position of skeptics - everything makes a difference until I try it and can reasonably conclude that it doesn't. this is a much more fun approach for me.

everyone should draw his or her own line in the sand and decide what is worth doing for themselves, otherwise we would surely go crazy. I cannot object to 'maybe it makes a difference, maybe it doesn't, but I can't be bothered to find out'.

however 'it doesn't make a difference, where is your proof, I demand to see it, otherwise, f**k you!' or 'this classifies as nervosa, everyone should avoid looking into this. by the way, my DHT tube amp has 20 transformers sticking out of it, I am totally sane and grounded' is arrogance masquerading as intellect. :(

I'm mostly in the don't reject somebody's experience, even if you reject their explanation of it camp.

    But I sometimes do anyway.

You're taking this out of context and may be mad you don't have the same number of transformers. Have a go on a fully dht discrete style adjustable tube amp and see if you can go lower without compromises.

A fuse makes a change in some context but I'm on purpose nasty because it's scraping the barrel type of upgrade when mostly everything is done and diled in IMO but often presented as recommended.
A fuse swap is a 0 to 3% change maybe, I don't believe it can fix shortcomings of components, or have a mandatory fuse upgrade when buying some specific gear or necessary in any way shape or form to have a world class system. This is voodo territory at best because math cannot be applied and best used as subtle flavouring when it works.

If anyone wants to try it I doubt any forum posts will or should stop them, I'm just sharing my experience and should be taken with a grain of salt.

The inconvenient truth is the fuse upgrade has no basis in science and it's unknown why it can make the difference it makes but it's so small and random it's unwise to say everyone should try it because too many cans of worms can be opened at the same time. Keeping it simple is best with the least amount of variables.

Tube rolling has massively more impact on sound flavouring yet as a once proponent I'm now against it publicly unless cheap enough.

To debunk the fuse once and for all, a component which can reach a maximum of 100% quality of a direct connection e.g. no fuse(academic of course, never run without a fuse). It's so simple to check how close a certain fuse is to an ideal case but somehow no one does it and the hardcore builders who can get around it with active monitoring don't care enough to implement.

There are a whole lot of compromises in amps where the ideal case is known but hard to implement due to cost or complexity so one example is RC coupling is less ideal than LC which is less ideal than interstage which is less ideal than source follower whitch is less ideal than DC. The fuse is already as close to the ideal as can be and there are so many much more serious bottlenecks to consider in the whole audio chain, why start at the end with the least impact?

IME fuse swapping are more different than trying to reach a hypothetical 100% quality, just like cable swapping. I did it because it is cheap and accessible compared to other audiophile components, and to my surprise it did make a tiny difference, for better or worse. For $2 I find it to be the cheapest "improvement" in my system.

FYI there are some chinese audiophiles use pure silver rod as fuse substitute, I guess this or hard wiring is the closest thing to a 100%fuse.[IMG] [IMG]

My limited experience with fuse swapping - it's like cable swapping to a similar cable - sometimes you get a small difference, sometimes nothing audible happens, and occasionally it makes a real difference b/c you find out the old one was actually was marginally functional.

Also I agree we can't have people rolling in here just yelling random stuff at the top of their lungs b/c modern society says "you can" although I do favor the SBAF approach of "let you rot on side of road" vs the "censored" approach many other forums take if you flip and crash as we don't want things getting stagnant or group think either.

Instructions in this thread were unclear and I swapped the fuse in my DAC with a micropenis and I don’t think it sounds great but then again I’m in a tremendous amount of pain right now

This seems like a very bad idea. Brings to mind a friend that replaced a couple fuses in his car with coins. Result was catastrophic and predictable.

    Oh god...

It's not just the utter stupidity of bridging a safety device it's... silver.

I'm allergic to silver. No, wait, I love silver: it is beautiful, and really satisfying to make things out of. But what audiophools love is not silver. It is the idea of silver. Their idea of silver. Which they then anthropomorphovomit all over their system, and expect people to be overawed.

Today i learned you should never blow your own fuse. Especially on a public forum.

Perhaps it is time to move on guys. I said my DAC was bright and the guy suggested I try aftermarket fuses. No harm done to anyone.

You're supposed to unwrap it first to dull the sensitivity.

In private is fine though. We don't kink shame here.

This is not addressed to any of the Faggots in this thread, only the people that are genuinely concerned with the best audio quality. So I tried a whole bunch of different fuses, synergistic orange etc etc a bunch of Chinese variants, nano copper/graphene fuses. All were major upgrades to the piss poor Glass fuses.....
Then I had an idea, I bought lab grade Silicon Dioxide SiO2... and mixed it with some Mineral oil (walgreens bought)
Then I opened up the infamous 2 dollar fuse, poured out all the quartz, and refilled it with the SiO2 mixture, and sealed with some SEAL ALL glue. It is resistant to oils, and maintains a tight bond.
would you believe it, it kicks the 200 dollars fuses in the f'ing balls. Not even close...
I proceeded to do a similar mod on all my fuses, amps etc etc
This is hands down the best I have ever heard my system, clarity for miles, and instruments sound hauntingly real.
Just my 2 cents on a mod that cost me 20 bucks, minus cost of fuses.
No more tweaking for me....This is what I expected my 20 grand system to sound like when I started my Audio Journey.
2 years of tweaking, and modding...and it ends with 2 dollar fuses, modded for the absolute f'ing win.
Faggots can eat a big fat dick......they can keep listening to their horseshit distorted pots and pans ....they can stay retarded ... The rest that are brave enough to experiment... You are absolutely welcome.
    peace.
