You might also like the Soekris 2541. I haven’t heard any of the Spring models but based on impressions, the Soekris will have a dryer tone.

I think I will pick up Greg’s Holo Spring.

I think this will do the trick. I will post back with impressions sometime down the road.

I’m thinking I’m going to head further back into midfi.

    headphone needs:
    1) closed strongly preferred
    2) $300 stretch to $400, new or used.
    3) wired - will be used for both music and guitar
    4) I liked my Ethers, and I liked my Dennon D7000’s
    5) I’ve enjoyed my HD800S for a couple years, I’d like less treble more bass, more “fun” signature.
    6) Sources will be Jot2 from BF2 or an old ALO Pan Am from modi MB, guitar amp, iPhone.
    7) Music - 60’s through 90’s rock, prog rock, metal, blues both acoustic and electric, some jazz (Al Dimeola, Jeff Beck, old Weather Report, Jean Luc Ponty type)
    8) I listen at lower volume most of the time.
    9) I also like the Auteur a lot, and the Aeolus almost as much.
    10) Strong preference for non wood cups. I want bullet proof-ish over beautiful.

I surely appreciate all ideas. If anyone has something they think might fit, and wants to trade + cash for my relatively excellent condition HD800S, PM me.

    Thanks all!

Based only on those two... Sennheiser HD25?
Get the HD25-13 model if you want 600ohm drivers.

How is the Penrose / Mobius from Audeze? That is close to your ballpark price and seems like it is pretty flexible if you pick the right one for your duty.

I’ll second M3NTAL and suggest you get on the Penrose loaner. I was pleasantly surprised, will do a write up by the end of the weekend.

Been there, done that. The on ears plus clamp didn’t work for me. The sound did, though. I did give it passing thought - cheap, bulletproof, sounds good. Thanks for suggesting.

Wow - gotta look into these. Totally off my radar, thanks!

penrose is wireless. I’m told BT is an issue for playing guitar - latency is noticeable enough to be a problem. I’m just planning to start learning guitar 62, so I suspect my playing will also be a problem. Hence the headphones…..

I was a happy Arya user until recently when it hit me when I was listening to it alongside a dynamic driver headphone. The plasticky sound (not very fluent with audio language so apologies). And I haven't been able to get over it. It has all the details I can ask for and it's super tight, extended, I can hear everything.. But everything also sounds unnatural and I'm starting to regret the purchase.

So I want to know where to go after this.. I do value soundstage quite a bit, I own and dislike the HD 6XX because it's so intimate. So something that sounds natural, has a good soundstage under 750 USD would be ideal. Also since I own the cayin IHA 6, headphones with a balanced connection would be good as the other outputs on this unit are not that good.

    Gear I own:
    Source: Audio-GD Dac19 / DIY Tda1541 Dac -> Cayin IHA-6 -> Headphones

Headphones I've owned and why I don't want to use them instead of buying a new one:
    1) 1More triple on-ear, modded to over-ear - Dark and lacks resolution
    2) AKG K712 Pro - Doesn't feel right, the stage is very good but I feel like I'm missing a lot of nuances even at high volume
    3) HD 6XX - Too intimate

Type of music I most listen to- Vocal-centric Indian music, classical.

Oh also, I'm from India so getting many headphones is difficult and expensive (No HE6 cuz can't get them here)

    Thanks in advance!

Have you ever listened to the e-mu teaks? They tick off a lot of your boxes although they are not a tight seal so may leak some sound into the environment. If you can find a used pair they should fall into your budget. Ah, wood cups so probably less bulletproof.

Have you heard the HE-X v2 from HFM? Of the newer models, it was the least "plastic" while retaining many of the bonuses of that large driver.

Audeze will get you similar pro's / con's with a different timbre (or that plasticy sound)

The Audio Zenith PM-X is one of my favorite all-around planars along with the HE560/HE6.

The Meze Empyrean is a seductive and laidback sound that seems low-fi, but I think they have a certain following and I'm not going to knock it.

anybody have a comment or opinion on either the Focal Elegia, which seems to oop or the “Listen Professional” for the use case above?

Adorama seems to have the Eligia at $399 on one day deal about every 2 weeks.

the Listen Professional is marketed as their studio monitor. It looks a decent package for $299.

    thoughts?

Hi can anyone tell me what makes an amplifier huge soundstage? It is due to topology type or something else? I am trying to find an open- soundstaging amplifier like the Schiit Asgard 1 but have not found yet. I don't mind if it sounds spongy or not powerful. Is forwardness and high power new norms in ss headamp world nowadays? Tks

I didn't care for the Elegia. It does have strong points. Notably you get a lot of detail retrieval without sibilance, and timbre -- particularly vocals -- is generally very good.

Unfortunately it also sounded congested to me, with a small soundstage and a clipped/pinched feeling owing to I guess a mid-centric tuning.

Its biggest failing is a hole in the low-end right where a bass guitar lives.

It picks back up again in the sub-bass, so it might make for a good modern pop/dance/electronic choice. But that chasm it has (between 100-200hz or so?) means that a traditional rhythm section has no punch -- you get the click of a bass drum attack and the harmonics of a bass guitar, but not much thump in the fundamental.

I usually keep expectations in check but auditions in previous years of the Elear and Clear didn't have these issues so I actually was fairly disappointed. Bottom line is it's damn hard to make a good closed-back headphone, I think. Just a lot more that can go wrong.

I ended up with a Modhouse Argon for my 'fun' closed back. Not sure how long I'll keep it since I no longer need the isolation, but it certainly suits me better than the Elegia. (For reference, my open-back tastes run in the HD650, Aeon Flow RT, LCD2C vein.)

    Hope that helps.

loadexfa wanted this here. It has nothing to do with advice.

    Philips SHP9600/00 vs SHP9500S/27 vs SHP9500/00

    What are the differences?

On usa.philips.com, the 9600 and 9500 have the same sound specifications. Here's how they differ from the 9500S.

    SHP9600/00 and SHP9500/00
    Frequency response: 12 - 35 000 Hz
    Sensitivity: 101 dB

    SHP9500S/27
    Frequency response: 6 - 35 000 Hz
    Sensitivity: 102

An email I sent them about SHP9500/00:
    "What's the sensitivity? Is it 101 db/mw or 101 db/V?"

    Don't over think these numbers.
They are mostly just used for marketing and aren't very useful specifications on their own.

The 9500 is the original and discontinued model.
It was replaced by the 9500S. Which came with a shorter cable and ditched the 1/4" adaptor.
The 9600 is the successor to both and is the current model.
It is an aesthetic refresh and tuned both a little warmer and darker than the 9500(S).

The /00 and /27 are Philips' region codes that denote the intended market for that particular stock.
