My plan was to apply a bit of quality digital EQ and see if the dip could be mitigated. Some HP's take to EQ well or good enough (e.g. Final D8000 Pro, OG Elear, etc.) and others don't (ZMF Verite, HD650, etc.) in my experience. Part of it is expectations - you can't expect too much.

Any thoughts if my plan is in vain with these? If so I will drop out.

I would love one but I’m getting this straight from Drop so it’s whatever comes stock. Could someone volunteer to loan a balanced cable of theirs with this? There must be people with balanced cables that aren’t being used. Thank you.

LOL, I put together a 4m balanced HD800 cable together a while ago using Furutech FHD-35 cable and fancy Furu HD800 connectors that I haven't had a use for since I sold my HD800SDRs. Only issue is that I've only tested it with a DMM for continuity, never actually plugged them into a pair of HD800s. Shoot me a PM if you think this could work.

I don't think your EQ plan has any predictable issue. Recall Marv also used Loki to tune its tonality a bit. My general assumption is if target frequency is neither too low (<100hz) nor too high (>4khz) everything is NOT automatically futile. From my own experience, digital EQs generally seem to degrade something I can't describe well but ymmv.

But I strongly surmise if anyone favors 800OG + non-extensive mod, 8XX+Any EQ won't satisfy that person enough.

Keep with the plan. I feel the HD8XX with EQ to fill in the 2kHz would actually work better than an HD800/S with EQ to lower the highs and raise the slight dip. Whatever I did to EQ the HD800/S, even with surgical EQ, it simply never worked. Even the great Tyll Hertsens tried EQ on the HD800S and could never get it to work right. There was always something wonky with the HD800/S with EQ. Only physical mods made the HD800/S right.

I'm thinking some of the physical tweaks applied to the HD8XX will help EQ'ability.

Are reversible mods allowed with this loaner, seeing as there is interest in cable swapping anyway? Curious to know how the BTA mod works with the 8XX, or mods from similar looking materials such as this

if they are truly reversible and you won’t leave any residue behind or peal anything off. ie the headphones will go back to exactly how they came to you cosmetically and physically and sonically then I’m ok with it.

Fair warning, when i tried those connectors years ago i needed brute force to get them in. Might be better now but it will probably wear out the socket in the headphones quick if they didn't change anything. They f'ing sucked, i was worried i'd break the headphones pulling them out.

Would it be possible to be added to this? Although I usually go for darker headphones, it being created by drop intrigues me. (Atlanta, GA)

I just read @sheldaze's profile post about disliking the HD 8XX with his "warm, tubey" setups for HD800/S, which weren't "working for 8XX so far."

I signed up for the HD 8XX loaner tour but have a BF2 --> ZDT Jr. with stock, JAN-GE 5654W, & Raytheon 5654 6AK5W tubes. I put together this setup for my HD 800 SDR. Am I right in assuming it'll be a poor pairing for the HD 8XX? If so, I'd be happy to bail on this loaner tour. Any suggestions?

Have a listen for yourself. That’s what loaners are for and Drop has already loaned us a demo unit so I feel like taking advantage of it and giving them a chance is actually better than dropping out. I get the sense that when a company gives us a loaner they like to see a lot of interest to make it worth their time and money.

Thank you, that's reassuring. I was worried I'd be taking up space on a popular loaner tour unnecessarily. It would be a great learning experience, though, even if the pairing doesn't turn out to be ideal. Thanks again.

Well if that's the case, if possible I'd like to try these as well.

    I'm in Atl, GA.
