I saw in the thread for the WM1Z/A that there was new Mr Walkman firmware available. The same firmware is available for the ZX300. I have not enjoyed the Mr Walkman sound previously and always returned to stock firmware, but I'm a sucker for customization options.

Glad I did this time. I do not feel the WM1Z tuning works at all on the ZX300; it sounds congested and bloomy, and chances are that's what turned me off previously. However, now I've tried out combinations of region and the other available tunings.

J region + Bright tuning was pretty good. However now I'm on CN region + Warm tuning and it sounds great to me, with the FLC8N and Tia Trio IEM I mostly use. CN region is supposed to 'push resolution while taming the bass' if a head-fi comment is to be believed (the only info google can find), while the Warm tuning brings back the bass and just a little bloom - seems like what the WM1Z is supposed to be (and I hope is, on the actual device). Definitely worth the messing around.

Edit - I also prefer 'normal' mode to the firmware's 'plus' modes. And I think High Gain is better on this device regardless (and I don't even think it's worth using from the standard output).
