@Rex Aeterna - I thought those old horns are supposed to be very efficient, why the beast pro amps?

Because they can often be found cheap on the used market. PA gear doesn't tend to have the "collectable" vibe that old hifi gear has.

like mention, they can be found reasonable used market. even simple thing like a scratch or very little rack rash even if on the botton will knock down good 50-100 bucks from used market from most places and even from online local finds. and of course no one wants to collect them. usually cause they're heavy, old or cause they have fans in them and being "pro" is another turn off for most people.

yea i use the altec 511b horns but, strapped on top of jbl 4648 dual 15" bass bins and parallel a original jbl 18" 4645 subwoofer with a loaded 2245 so i have bout 1500w of motor power handling, all ran by single crown xti 4002. i might find something bigger one day but, the xti 4002 is more then capable for my needs for now(1600wpc@2ohms, 3200w bridged@4ohms). of course i dont run 1500w all the time(probably like couple watts most) but due sensitivity of low frequencies and bit peq boosting with 6db@20hz to flatten response(not worried bout hf roll off too much since most times i prefer it) the headroom for movies and some music i listen to depending on mood will draw good amount of power..i usually use bigger amps for bass bins or subwoofers...but, for now been keeping my xti for fullrange till i pick up more amps cause i have more bass bins and little pair of recapped altec model 14's i have to pick up from my friend so, i need couple extra amps in the house.

I'm about 25min from you trying to trick out khorns with all the aftermarket stuff (single tap, no biamping). In 2mo I'll have something working. I spend much time thinking about amplification (when I should be painting the damn room their going into). I grabbed the Crown D60 because I read PK used that on his. This tiny amp driving my tiny homemade fostex computer speakers has just about converted me from bigboy speaker to nearfield monitors (I may as well be tethered to headphones). I would have never considered Crown before hearing this. So far I've heard the pre-mod khorns driven by the 35wpc D60, 45wpc kt88 ultra-linear class A, and a 100wpc Hegel. I'm intrigued by accounts 105+dB speakers driven by kilowatt amps, especially those with soaring damping factors. I'm rolling the dice over here so any recommendations or words of encouragement are welcome.

really? 25 min way not that far i think..anyhoo, i dont know bout using kilowatt amps on horns themselves since most compression drivers are rated for no more 15-100w. of course there is exceptions like some large format 2" drivers which are rated much higher but, of course has much more limited hf response. i mean you can use whatever amp you want on top if biamping cause lot people even myself use just as big amps from top to bottom but, cause im weird and need matching amps if do so...

sound it depends. i would give it a shot witin budget to play with. people like tubes up top but, to me there can be no difference if either amp is well made. i listen from multiple pro and home recievers, integrated and power/pre combo to completly tube seperates like cometely rebuilt from front back all upgrade dyanco st-70 and dynaco psa-3 pre and receivers like complete rebuilt fisher 500c and enjoyed it. things tend to sound the same than different in most cases with tiny differences in some cases as well. its just for musical enjoyment...

dont know if high damping factor matter really too much either. once you add the source and cable it's pretty mute anyways. lots of unrestained power can sometimes make bit difference even in low level listening, but, only sometimes and depends on amp of course but, big differences is when comes to pushing it/cranking it or driving large bass drivers some can tell. it just comes down to budget and needs. i use big amps cause i can and cause for personal needs since i have tons of dual 15" bass bins and 18" bins/sub on hand. i use the altec 511b horns cause i like them and one few horns i like. it just comes down to whatever think want or need really.

crown d60/d75 are favorite of the d series. lot people tend to like them more than the bigger d150/300 brothers..found some locally before but, while tempted i never really bought them cause always had too much stuff.
