I'm not sure this statement rings true, but I see what you're getting at. Blazing Saddles has a good dose of Tarantino historical revisionism. In a way, Django Unchained is something of a serious version of Blazing Saddles.

Brooks showed how much things had changed by putting a black person from 100 years in the future back in the old west in a position of power, and the character is so impossible for the time the environment implodes. The endless use of the n word is naturally what would have happened as all the bad guy's minds attempted to divide by 0. There's a kind of fantasized revenge there.

Sure he's a stereotype; the accent isn't quite accurate, but the show got the gist of the South Asian convenience store owner right. My mom was the Asian female version of Apu who ran a corner store and I worked there on occasion during the summers, so I can relate to the incidents that Apu had to deal with at his store. I mean the Simpsons is a show about a fat lazy stupid balding white American at the controls of a nuclear power plant with creepy Christian neighbors so perfectly polite to the point are annoying!

What are they going to apologize for next? The Chinese and Japanese characters on the Simpsons drawn with slightly slanted eyes? Or the Jewish characters drawn to look even more Jewish. Everybody is a caricature and stereotype on the Simpsons. That's the point of the show.

The South Park guys got it and wrote an episode defending the Simpsons, highlighting how political correctness has run amok. Of course Hank Azaria (who voiced Apu) had to resign and apologize profusely for his supposed racial transgressions. In today's climate, he would have been skewered in the biz had he not.

It seems the only Asian who got hurt was Hari Kondabolu. The PC police picked up on this and ran with it. While 99% of Indians don't care. I wish white progressives wouldn't try to save peoples who have twice their household income.

Sorry, I would have laughed with him - while also knowing that in certain circles that would not be cool. Maybe I'm misinterpreting the statement. Captain America is a super white character, possibly the whitest character in all of comics. I mean, if The Falcon was Colin Kaepernick, he'd tell Steve Rogers to f**k off, or at least tell him that he wasn't donning that red, white, and blue shit. Heck, If I touched Captain America's shield, I'd turn white too.

That is literally the plot of Falcon and the Winter Solider. Hell, they introduce a black super soldier contemporary of Steve Rogers and he explicitly tells Falcon that no self-respecting black man would ever willingly wear the mantle of Captain America...and then they have Falcon take on the mantle of Captain America and end the show with a speech about how politicians need to just do better. Some of the hottest garbage to come out of the MCU, and I enjoy most of the Marvel stuff.

And the guilty white liberals who created the Simpsons, self flagellating to atone for some perceived wrong... in reality it was so they wouldn't be cancelled. They had no problem making the hundreds and hundreds of episodes of this show for decades... until twitter rolled around.

The thing about the Simpsons is it made fun of EVERYBODY. It wasn't targeting anyone specific. That's why it was so great. It acknowledged that everyone has something that can be laughed at.

In all seriousness, yes, there is legit racism in the world (and in my experience, much more of it elsewhere on average than in the US), yes there are a ton of legit problems here in the US, and yes so many things need to be fixed... but it almost seems like the complaining and stuff we see on twitter or coming out of most of academia now is dumb to the point that it was actually meant to both set things back and sabotage any chance of legitimate reform in the next 20-40 years, primarily by distracting us from the real underlying issues...

One of my boots-on-the-ground activist friends called leftist academia "mental gentrification" and that hasn't left my brain since. sometimes it feels like they're trying to distract everyone with theory

Still one of my favorite Simpsons moments. Clever writing that on the surface the show was making fun of the gays, but in reality was calling out Homer being an asshole (the whole episode is called "Homer's Phobia"). Love the part where you see the Pink Flamingos in the background when John Waters's character is on screen for the first time. Man I so love that episode.

Sometimes I wished the Simpsons was done in the early to mid 2000s, at that point the show had jumped the shark and it was started to lose its importance in a changing culture climate. Even watching the golden age stuff I love the stuff that nowadays is considered to be too offensive.

Also love this part where they were making fun of PBS (which I think is accurate) and Betty White doing a guest appearance:

I’m sure some YouTuber has put the relevant clips online by now. It was embarrassing.

Nearly fifty years ago, and I was a 20-ish youngster trying to get to grips with the middle-class-white part of my upbringing, I was sitting on a bus in London. At the front was a bunch of black schoolgirls. The conversation was would you go out with a white guy; would you screw a white guy,

The answers tended towards the no, but one youngster said "Why not? What difference does it make? Some time in the future everybody is going to be shades of grey anyway."

It seemed to be a damned good, mature, answer to me, and it caused to me to wonder (ever since) that perhaps the humanity was just not mature enough to handle race.

OK, OK, the answers are not so simple. A world that has become shades of grey will also have lost or diluted many of its cultures. And that is only one reason why, perhaps, it isn't, and won't be the answer. But I still like what that teenager said, and the way she said it.

Oh god and how. Give me a quick-fire word-association test designed to detect racism: I'd fail. Associations that get baked in at an early age never really get dissolved, however much we know they are wrong.

Been working on it for fifty years. Had some success. The biggest success is knowing that crap is there.

Stuff that would/could never be made today...

Y'all mostly American, I guess. Did any of you come across the British TV 60/70s series Till Death Us Do Part? That's something that needs to be seen again today, but it won't. Even at the time, some people thought that the actor who played the racist, loyalist, thatcherite Alf Garnet was really racist/etc and not just showing up such attitudes to be what they were/are.

I've seen an academic conference where applause was "banned" so it wouldn't hurt the feelings of those who didn't get as much applause as someone else. The hilarious part? This wasn't even a conference for socio/whatever, it was a food and nutrition conference.

Here is another prime (recent) example of how the woke stuff starts to mutate content:

Peter Dinklage put up a stink about the new upcoming Snow White film, bitching that the dwarves lived in caves or something. When in fact they don't live in caves, they work in a cave as miners and have a house. But Disney got wind of this rant (which blew up on twitter of course), and then Disney releases a statement about not wanting to reinforce offensive stereotypes. I didn't realize dwarves living in caves (which in incorrect anyway) was a stereotype.

The entire thing basically hinges on false information. But that's the social media era for ya.

I am confused. Are the dwarves humans with dwarfism or magical dwarves, because that may matter. :)

Yeah, your interpretation of the subtlety was indeed likely lost. I'm pretty sure it was a statement that there's no way a black guy could be "the good guy". But sure, maybe laughing along would be better. Luckily, I only have two other relatives that think the n word is the best way to refer to anyone not white.

So was he not paying attention to the rest of the film where Mackie was part of the Avengers? Maybe his comment was more about being a leader? Which is of course laughable considering the fact that the dad making the joke was ex military (plenty of blacks and black leaders in military)
