It definitely has a Hindustani feel to it. I have zero technical background. My friend (who is trained) tells me it is Pantuvarali. So not a conventionally Hindustani sounding raga (based off other compositions I have heard). Apparently he does some grahabedam in the alapana.

Hmm...makes sense from percussion point of view. Maybe we can say 8(each beat) X 2.
Long time, Thad ji. How have you been? How is the concert scene?

Sure! It is more technically accurate.

I'm good, as people say these days ;)
Thanks. I've been very busy taking photographs :)

Opening up. My favourite hall started to go public last month, and is fully open as of this month. Let's hope that there are no bad new covid waves, and we can have a real December this year! Coming to Chennai?

I saw L.Shenkar in NYC. It's been very difficult for artists to get visas to come here. A recent qawwali concert had to be cancelled for this reason. Selva Ganesh and another percussionist were supposed to be accompanying Shenkar, but they couldn't get visas. Fortunately, he was able to find very nice replacements for the concert. Electric violin may not be my favorite, but it was a pleasant concert in Brooklyn, and check out that golden orange hair!

I think eventually people will come to live with it or we will have strong enough herd immunity for simple mutations. I hope so too that the December season is celebrated in full swing this year.
No plans to come to Chennai as of now, Thad Ji. Maybe, in December if things go well. Let's see. :)

Haha, doesn't that golden orange hair look clownish or odd on him? Had seen a video of him with that bizzare hair in a traditional Carnatic concert and judging by the comments, no one quite warmed up to the style - appearance or playing wise. Speaking of playing, his playing has also changed a lot from his Shakti days, hasn't it ?

Hope the concert was invigorating and absorbing! :)

I think he spells his name sha. But who knows! Some people get attacks of mid-life numerology!

Have not seen him. Have seen his brother, L Subramaniam, a few times. The last time I saw him I didn't didn't think it was that great, but had previously been blown away by his his sheer virtuosity. Has to be experienced, though one may think it over-rides the musicality sometimes, like on a CD I have where he plays a varnam in god-knows how many speeds.

I never saw the original Shakti. Actually, previously, had not been that keen on John McLaughlin, but that was based on a sample of maybe just one LP that was in the house music collection.

    That's a shame

I think he looks weird. Numerology is not the only thing that can hit in mid life! Hey, he might not go a bomb on my hair either: each to their own. Kunlun, the colour is probably henna.

From the email ad for the concert: "Master violinist/vocalist/composer L. Shankar (aka Shenkar) is renowned for his deeply soulful performances of Indian classical ... "

So, I guess we'll have to agree to agree on the spelling.

Could be henna, he was rocking (raga-ing?) the golden yellow.

For numerology, I ran into a numerologist and told him my idea for a name change ("Leighton Chatsworthy of Chatsworthy Manor") and he said no, my real name ("Alexander Kunlun of a Blanket in a Sunny Spot") was a better fit...

There is a tiny, tiny, tiny letter "a" after the number on my office door for numerology reasons. I figured, why not?

Of the hundreds of concerts I see, this one recently stood out for its gentle beauty. An outstanding feature, for me, is the synergy of the singer and the violinist, who is now her guru.

RKS is amazing. The lec dems from the Guru-Shishya team have been a treat.

Wow that you have been watching such things! I'm that lazy music lover that doesn't go to lecdems!

Actually, I did go to one of his once. He did it in English, it was very clear, interesting, and of course the music was great.

He is an extremely nice person too.

Haha I have seen only a couple. The technicalities and music theory go over my head. I enjoy the renditions plus RKS seems to be a sanskrit scholar. He gives detailed explanations (in english) on the sahitya which is fascinating to me.

Great! Actually, I guess I prefer not to know what the songs mean. <blush>

Another scholar who gives good lec-dems in English is Sumathi Krishnan. I don't know what might be available on youtube etc. Sometimes I've been to these things just because an artists wants friendly faces in the audience, especially December, when they face the possibility of having no audience at all! I've done that for Sumithra Vasudev, one of my favourite musicians/people, even though she speaks in Tamil.

(And usually their fears of the entire possible audience choosing to go somewhere else are unfounded anyway.)

I just keep coming back to the Water Lily Acoustics records. The non-fusion albums are my favorites and the production quality is the best I've ever heard for acoustic music of any genre.

So much great stuff on this thread while I've been away, looking forward to listening my way through it. Thanks to @Thad E Ginathom @Kunlun @archer88 and everyone contributing to the thread.

P.S. If you're afflicted with the vinyl disease I recommend picking up one of these albums, I've paid way too much for NM copies on discogs and it's still worth it.

Last week I saw Abhik Mukherjee on sitar and Dibyarka Chatterjee on tabla at an India music school celebrating its 25th year of operation in NYC. It's Chhandayan at tabla.org

Dibyarka is the son of the founder of the school, the Farukhabad gharana tabla player Samir Chatterjee, and Abhik is the dean of curriculum and co-founder of Brooklyn Raga Massive, a popular community of Indian classical and Indian music adjacent musicians. Abhik plays in the Etawah gharana who gave us the god of sitar, the late Ustad Vilayat Khan.

There were about 40 people in attendance, making it a very intimate concert. This included many musicians and the son of Vilayat Khan as well, all there to show support and enjoy. When this happens, the concert is always amazing, as was the case here.

It had rained for 36 hours, so Abhik played the monsoon season raga, Miyan ki Malhar and later played a very romantic Mishra Piloo, his playing was just one beautiful improvisation after another.

I'm looking forward to seeing further concerts there.

Another year, another birthday... Another birthday concert!

I'm damned lucky to be able to do this, even once a year.

Not the greatest looking video, but enjoyable music. I love Subramaniam's carnatic violin albums, interesting to hear him paired with Ali Akbar Khan and Zakir Hussain.
