I can’t leave this out either. Sounds like it should be Bernard Hermann.

Honourable mention to the Stone’s ‘2000 Light Years from Home’.

I love big choral works by Francis Poulenc. IMO the best of those is his Mass in G Major, composed in 1937.

Here is the Mass' Agnus Dei. IMO this sounds otherworldly & quite haunting, indeed:

An odd duck from Alex Lifeson of Rush from the Victor album. Surprisingly dark.

Glenn Danzig - Black Aria. An interesting solo project from him at the time.

    Yeah definitely.
I remember watching THX1138 on my own when I was around 13 or so. BBC2 used to show 'film classics' early in the evening, including this one and it was around 1983/4.
I felt almost traumatised by the end of it! lol

The scene where there was an explosion in one of the radioactive material handling cells and aftermath scenes viewed through a pixelated control room CRT monitor by LUH was particularly harrowing to a young fella who'd never scene such grotesque and frightening images.
I went on to work in the nuclear industry (mostly Sellafield) and was directly involved in the design of low to high-level radioactive materials handling systems (MOX, SIXEP et al) and I don't know if the memories of seeing this film all those years previously played any part in motivating me towards that industry. Who knows?
I would also end up seeing some scary, if not as grotesque things at Sellafield eventually. But thats a story for another day... :O

Since we're on film soundtracks, here is perhaps the most haunting of the themes in Bernard Herrmann's soundtrack for Hitchcock's VERTIGO. It was hard to choose just one theme; all of them were written to be haunting--and are.

This theme, "The Bay," is about desperate longing for someone who's right in front of you, but doesn't really see you:
