One of the best parts about Nina Simone’s Carnegie Hall concert wasn’t just that it was personal, wasn’t just that it was political, not just that she is kicking ass as a singer… it’s that she had the audience eating out of her hand. She crushes them and lifts them up.

I was cruising through my library an re-discovered this jewel from 2008. The entire album is an absolute beast BTW.

Good goddamn, tho this is derivative Jimmy Smith wannabe stuff, it's frickin' swinging. And with good speakers that slam, it's a good way to spend an afternoon writing with sun streaming in the windows...

Dan Weiss Trio's new Dedication. Density, rhythmic surprise, grabs and doesn't let go.

Compiling tunes for a party and got totally hung up on Horace Silver (not for the first time). This is my favorite of his compositions, not just for that tight, propulsive rhythm, but even more for the great solo by Joe Henderson. Joe usually excelled on medium tempo tunes, but here he's really jumping. He plays this chart like a track star going over the high hurdles.

I did not know of this guy, but it came up as an algorithm based "discovery". An artist not known to me and a bit of an obscure homage. I like Chet Baker so gave it a go and the vocal jazz works for me.

As a youth I visited a bar that allowed vetted underage to enter around the holidays. The jukebox always had folk like Frank Sinatra and my fave discovery Blossom Deary.

Now I have been inspired to go down the Chet Baker rabbit hole, much further than previously.

Amos Lee sings like Chet Baker?

Really tight band and the track progresses nicely into a more energetic rhythm.

I got to hear a lot of marimbaists here in CO. My daughter went to a marimba camp or school for a few summers. At least we didn't have to buy one, haha.

Jon Irabagon's Rising Sun, with Matt Mitchell (piano, Fender Rhodes), Chris Lightcap (electric and acoustic bass), and Dan Weiss (drums), plus guest appearances by Miles Okazaki (guitar) and Adam O'Farrill (trumpet) is hot, dense, tight, as one should expect from this intense crew. I know I'll be listening to this again and again, so many layers in every second. Very well recorded too.

With O'Farrill with Mitchell creatively channelling In a Silent Way on the last track Needles to take it even higher, I was transported to that night in my youth when Miles rebuilt my sense of music.

big Jeff Parker fan, this is a mellow departure for him, but I'm loving it. The pressing is great too if you're a vinyl nutjob.

For non-vinyl-heads, the digital download from Bandcamp is worthwhile. I agree, mellower but so much fun. I heard him live in SF a few times before COVID, I could do much more...

A so far unrecorded duo for the ages: Ambrose Akinmusire and Ron Carter performed a magical set at SFJAZZ on Sunday. Mr. Akinmusire, current SFJAZZ artistic director, organized it as a tribute to his teacher Mr. Carter -- using here the honorifics as they did to each other for respect, which they also demonstrated by dressing to the 9s. The set started slow, edgy and sparse, evoking blues and spiritual themes in a longing, sad but committed way, bringing forward the terrible struggles underlying the music; and developed with faster, more recognizable, more fun-forward themes, ending in a glory of call-and-response twists, turns, and subtle musical jokes. Mr. Carter, at 85, is a bit bent but his fingers and musical imagination are as nimble as ever. Mr. Akinmusire, at 40, shows the shape of trumpet to come: edgy, impossible to typecast, on a mission to make this music new again. We left the set between elation and tears, such creative and deeply felt music won't likely be repeated in our experience.

Eclectic stack of recent releases I've been enjoying, from straight ahead to bleeding edge.

    Love and Peace, Diego Rivera
Eye of I, James Brandon Lewis
    Blues Variant, Michael Feinberg
    Jump, Julieta Eugenio
    Music Delivery/Percussion, Andrew Cyrille
    Rising Sun, Jon Irabagon
From the Dancehall to the Battlefield, Jason Moran
The Emerald Duets, Wadada Leo Smith
    Naked Truth, Avishai Cohen
    Fragile, Ingrid Laubrock/Andy Milne

If you need to pick one, go with From the Dancehall to the Battlefield but don't forget to study the incredible backstory for that work, a remembrance and revival of James Reese Europe, a pioneer of American music and Black musical independence. We heard this live at SFJAZZ recently, preceded by a conversation with Jason Moran, so much to learn about a very difficult and influential creative history.

Composition by Sons of Kemet drummer Tom Skinner, joined by Shabaka Hutchings and Nubya Garcia. A nice groovy track.
