Oh wow, really unique set. One should not get too loaded with beverages in that venue. Big chance of rolling down the hill.

Tomorrow, 4th July, is my 65th Birthday .

The good news is that I am part-sponsoring a concert of Carnatic (South Indian) Classical music by Smt R Vedavalli, who is my most favourite artist and my dear and revered friend.

    P1020360a-640.jpg

It will be webcast by Parivadini. 6.15pm, IST (which is GMT+5:30) and should be available for viewing thereafter.

I just saw the 2nd show of Johnny Clegg's Final Journey Tour. Since I was 12 I've been listening to his music. Now he's battling cancer and on his final tour, and this is likely the last time I will see him. The firelight has danced its last upon your face my friend. Hamba kahle, Johnny.

Two concerts from my carnatic life of this week. Amazing music, one from the younger generation, one from the elder:

I saw Vishwa Mohan Bhatt playing North Indian classical music on the slack-key guitar in Brooklyn a while back.

More recently, I got to see Tejendra Narayan Majumdar on Sarod, also North Indian classical. He's really one of the top sarodiyas alive. He played a raga which has a springtime feeling (North Indian ragas are keyed to time of day, and some are keyed to the season). This was Basant Bahar, and it was beautiful.

This was at the Rubin Museum, a museum of Himalayan art, they have a lot of neat cultural events. The head of India's U.N. mission was two rows ahead of me. That's the back of her head in the picture!

Last night Animals As Leaders in Haarlem.

Do you know the feeling of having a day off after a long shift and feeling the need to drink a big coffee? Well until Animals As Leaders played, that kept aching me and there was no coffee at the venue.

Then Animals As Leaders started. The moment they started playing it felt like a controlled explosion that hit you wave after wave. The energy of their enthusiasm was felt in the music. The drummer shifted between Jazz, Metal and Prog in an instant. The bassist grooved tightly and the lead guitarist produced beautiful melodies and solos which flowed from transition to transition in a snap.

They closed with "Cafo." f**k that was an experience. Yeah I no longer needed coffee.

Live they sound so much better than on the albums. Words cannot describe it...

Nice. i remember him when he was young and black-haired, and had not long since developed that instrument, which, iirc, he calls the Mohan Veena.

I had a similar experience with the absence of a different substance, and the Allman Brothers, back in 1970-something. Once they started playing I just felt wonderful!

(I was looking for a live music thread and this semi-unloved one is what I found; if there's another I'd like to know.)

Bumping because I love to see pictures from performances people attend. I haven't been to a show in a while, but here's a fuzzy shot from seeing Jonathan Richman about 3 weeks back at the Somerville Theatre (Somerville, MA). Note the total lack of a guitar strap and pick. And of course that's Tommy Larkins at the kit, as he has been for the last 20+ years.

If you have a chance to see Joanathan I would *highly* recommend it; the smaller the gig the better. You can go in cold and still have an incredible time - it's like going to a funny musical philosophy lecture. Hard to describe really, but not a typical concert experience for sure.

Resurrecting this thread because concerts are a thing again, and I missed live music so much in 2020/most-of-2021. I'm doing mostly outdoor venues these days unless I'm making an exception for bands that I really want to see (recently, Japanese Breakfast, War On Drugs, Yussef Dayes).

Last show I went to was Beach House at the Greek in Berkeley last month. This is like the 10th time I've seen them live so no surprises. Good mix of the new album and mixing in their hits from Teen Dream onward. The new material leaves lots of breathing room, as their drummer was finding lots of pockets to jam the f**k out. Wish I took some good photos, but it was packed so we stayed way in the back so we had some dancing room.

Next up for me is Spoon at the end of the month!

Anyone have any shows lined up that they're excited about?

This thread needs to be more active. There’s great live music happening everywhere.

One of the perks living in SoCal is everyone plays somewhere here while on tour. Saw 6 shows this past Oct-Dec.

Saw 70 concerts since start of December!

Sorry for the extreme one*-upmanship. People in this city have the unique opportunity to watch vast amounts of South-Indian classical music during our December Season**. Hundreds of concerts are available.

It's crazy really, and I'm exhausted. And have hundreds of photos to edit. But, after the covid years we are delighted that it is happening again.

    *ok, sixty-four-upmanship, lol.

** and more than a few every week for the rest of the year.

Some pics from some shows I went to toward the end of the year.

Summit Sound -- this is a great annual concert at the top of Mt. Tam here in the SF Bay Area. This year had The War On Drugs headlining with Fruit Bats and Faye Webster as the openers. Since this is on Mt. Tam, the concern ends at 6pm, which is great for my old ass these days.

    War on Drugs:

Adele at Caesar's Palace -- we won the Adele lottery and went out to Vegas to see her at her Caesar's residency. I wouldn't consider myself a huge Adele fan, but this is like the 4th time I've seen her perform and she really puts on a great show with tons of production involved.

The Smile -- The last show of 2022 for me (because The Roots got postponed to 2023) was the Radiohead offshoot band, The Smile. Unfortunately, this is the only picture I took.

Big Thief, on tour for Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe In You. Can't wait to see them again this Feb! Upcoming show will make three times that I've seen them, each time they've been selling out increasingly bigger venues, and the two times I did see them have had much different vibes. This night, they played loose and were awful jammy, very Neil Young with Crazy Horse-kinda interpretations of their songs.

The tour for Two Hands in 2019, they played very straightforward and faithful to the record and but also hauntingly—trails of reverb echoing against the walls of the small, cramped club—it was very intimate and heartfelt, I'll never forget that show.

This upcoming show will be at the biggest venue that indie bands play in Dallas, which is quite large. Wondering how they'll be this time. Never a dull moment at a Big Thief show though, highly recommend checking them out—whether their records or this upcoming NA tour!

(Adrianne Lenker's ceramic mug full of water was the real star of the show this night.)

Guessing from your username you're already a fan. I saw them last summer outdoors, really good show.

YES - I have an upcoming trip to NYC at the end of February and Big Thief are playing on my final night there at Radio City Music Hall. I just got tickets the other day. I saw them tour Two Hands a few years back (probably before COVID), but missed them when they toured Dragon New Warm earlier this summer in California.

Love checking out venues when I'm traveling. Will also be seeing Japanese Breakfast and Kevin Morby at Carnegie Hall and Joe Lovano at Village Vanguard during that week.

Hahah yes -- I created this username when I was 13 (thinking I was sooo clever), and it's stuck with me over 25 years later. I got into them hard around when Illadelph came out when I first saw their What They Do music video. I haven't seen them live since before they joined the Jimmy Fallon show, so it's been quite a few years.
