Well, the Onyx advent calendar got me interested again in trying roasters from around the country, so back to Mistobox I go.

It's been over 5 years since I used them last.

    First up:

Methodical Coffee Roasters from Greenville, SC:

    https://methodicalcoffee.com/products/ethiopia-dur-feres

I was interested to see that the subscription actually saves me money now. It was the more expensive option years ago.

The cost comes out to $20 per 12 oz bag. Locally, I've been spending $22-$26 per bag.

Cool. I have enjoyed drinktrade.com for a while, Methodical is one of their regulars too. Good roaster in my experience.

I almost went drinktrade, because I saw that Passenger was on their list and I remember you saying good things about them. But, Mistobox was the more economical choice and their selection still looks pretty strong.

Are you only getting one bag at a time? I get two bags at a time (because my wife and I drink a bag in less than a week) and I average just under 20 a bag shipped. There’s a bigger discount with two bags. My shipments are every two weeks and I supplement with local roasters between shipments.

I'm the only coffee drinker in the house, so two bags/week would really start to pile up on me.

Maybe not the worst plan, since you can pause shipments at any time.

I was in Home Goods yesterday and they had several Fellow Stagg EKG stainless kettles for $99. Not sure if Home Goods will have them all over the country but thought I’d let our fellow coffee drinkers know.

nice. I noticed some Fellow travel tumblers there and was wondering if they ever get other Fellow stuff. Was just at mine today and they didn’t have those kettles.

I went to my local Home Goods and...they had the Fellow Ode Grinder for $199.99. (But no Stagg kettles, alas.)
IMG_5091.JPG Edit: You can get a refurb on the Fellow site for $195. FYI.

^Yeah, I have a Capresso conical burr grinder and the static electricity is real. I hate knocking on it the next day and seeing how much coffee releases. I have to add a gram to compensate for losses.

Fellow has a new grinder coming out pretty soon. Supposed to be under $200 I believe.

I get static cling on my v1 Ode where the grinds come out. I usually use the RDT method an atomizer, to reduce static.

The new model I posted about is supposed to have static reduction as well.

My latest coffee upgrade is an @Vansen recommended Origami Dripper (size Medium). Can find on Williams Sonoma, as well as the wood collar.

What is cool is that you can use either Kalita Wave or Hario v60 filters.

I am using Kalita Wave 185 filters and a Kalita Wave 500mL carafe.

Really like it so far, filters are less fidgety to place and use. I think I get a better pour over and pull better flavors out over my Chemex.

The anti-static functionality of my Eureka Specialita works so well that RDT doesn't affect the amount of retention, usually 0.1-0.2 grams. Not sure how well it would work for pourovers, I bought it for single dose espresso. It's relatively humid where I live, so that may be a factor.

Anyone here familiar with the Niche Zero? I'm thinking of selling off my WM1A and putting the proceeds towards this grinder. I need something that's a daily driver for pour overs while excelling at an espresso grinder with light roast beans.

While I’ve heard it’s a great grinder I don’t know that much about it but I will say that when I’ve had an espresso setup I didn’t find it practical or fun to try and switch back and forth between espresso and pourover on the same grinder. i usually just kept two grinders. Do you currently use one grinder for both?

Even on my Baratza Vario with a supposed static reduction grounds cup there are still plenty of grounds that stick to it. The only grinder I have or have had with no retention at all is my OE Lido E with stainless steel grounds jar. Zero retention. I also have a Capresso Infinity grinder that I keep around as backup. Static is indeed pretty bad there. I always give it a decent whack or two on the back under the hopper when I use it.

Niche Zero is much better as an espresso grinder than pourover unless you love big bodied coffees. If you're upgrading from something less, it'll still likely be an upgrade either way, but that's the only caveat I'd throw out there.

I’ve been into specialty coffee for 15 years now and it took me ten years to really find my style and dial in my tastes. I found that my favorite coffees are light roast (don’t go below 50 Agtrons) washed Kenyans (other East African coffees can compete, with Burundi coming in second) on a Hario V60 using Tetsu Kasuya’s 4:6 brew method. This ideal Kenyan is blackberry forward with a graham cracker base and the finish of a slightly astringent black tea (but not an astringent coffee!).

I buy about two 250g light roast washed East African coffees each month and am usually satisfied with what I buy. However, I ran across Feast’s Kenya Nyeri Thuti recently. It was okay on my Origami with a Kalita using a two pour method I like, but was nothing that’d I’d remember in year from now. The second time I brewed it using the V60 and Tetsu Kasuya’s 4:6 method. I was blown away. This is the best coffee I’ve had in about two years and is one of the best coffees I’ve ever had. After I was lamenting the end of the bag, a second one showed up at my house via @CEE TEE. The second bag was from a different batch and is just as good.

This coffee is just a stellar example of what you should expect from a washed Kenyan coffee

I grabbed this bag from the Drink Trade subscription that my wife got me, but it’s available on Feast’s site, too.
