Loved this one. I'm very excited for the Kharkanas trilogy to be finished, so I can read that and then re-read the original Malazan series hopefully just in time for the Witness trilogy to be concluded. Wishful thinking on my part about the timing maybe, but Erikson is a writing machine, it could happen.

I have a friend whose 13 year old is a voracious reader. Like plowed through the Wheel of Time series in a few weeks. Do you all have any recommendations for fantasy and science fiction series that are age appropriate? His dad is particularly averse to adult/sex scenes, and would like to keep violence to a reasonable level (some can be slain, but we don't need gory details). Thanks!

Brandon Sanderson? The Stormlight Archive is still ongoing and appears to be on track to continue for many years yet, but the man churns out a lot of text per publication and tells fun stories. Been a while since I read through but from memory and looking things up, it's pretty PG-13.

Agreed, Brandon Sanderson is great! His Mistborn series is also fun.

I found out about him through Final Empire! Since then I've read both the OG series and the Era 2 stuff, a lot of his standalone books like Elantris, Warbreaker, and Arcanum Unbounded. That's all on top of the Stormlight stuff and associated books, haha. I hear criticism about his writing style being "staid" and "mass market", but I read his stuff for fun.

Conversely, for someone who wants a long read that ISN'T kid friendly and will make you want to watch fluffy cartoons to recenter yourself: Malazan Book of the Fallen by Steven Erikson.

My understanding is that the Stormlight Archive is planned to be 10 volumes eventually.
Sanderson is a pretty devout Mormon, so the pg13 nature of his work is not terribly surprising.

Didn't know that about him, I tend to not follow authors as much as their works. Right I know that the current Stormlight arc is aiming to be 10 volumes, but what about the future Cosmere stuff where it all fits together?

I tend to be the same with most artists. My mom, on the other hand, is like, “I can’t watch that movie because that asshole is a democrat.” Ok, boomer.

The Dark Tower series is pretty age appropriate if I remember correctly. The first book may be hard for him to get through due to the style, but it's short and the series as a whole is great. I think the wheel of time is the only other age appropriate fantasy I'd recommend, but he's already read it.

@DigMe HAHA my family does much of the same with lots of musicians I'm into. Probably explains my leaning into personal audio.

Stephen King? I DID read those as a tween but wouldn't consider those very "friendly".

@fraggler Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels. Sex and violence? mostly made fun of. The man is a satirist. Perfect for teenage reading. Often overlooked or unknown to US audiences due to publishing disputes lasting until his death. There are 41 novels in the series. A first timer should read them in the order they were published, starting with The Colour of Magic. Else there are guides on alternate reading orders. The fans are like the alt-rock of fantasy readers. Crazy, crazy in love and dedicated.

Seconding the Discworld novels, although probably not starting with Colour of Magic. My introduction was Night Watch when I was 14, which is my favourite in the series. He could probably start with Guards Guards as well, or Equal Rites.

I should add that 16 years on I am still rereading them.

I just finished "When McKinsey Comes to Town". I had some experience with them as they were retained by a company I worked for in the 201x's. I had some not-good opinions of them at the time, but this book goes through quite a number of horrendous things they've done. If you wonder why wealth continues to be concentrated in fewer and fewer people; and the middle class is slowly sinking; McKinsey is accountable for some part of that.

I only know what I know about him because of my son. And that doesn't include the future of the Cosmere generally. I've only read the first two of the S.A. books. He is prolific as hell though.

I remember the Shannara series by Terry Brooks quite fondly. Great world building and I believe very age appropriate.
