More sub-bass, but not too boomy, more open sound, bit of high-end sparkle...TH-X00 might actually fit your needs well. I think it is worth a shot, and resale shouldn't be too difficult if you don't like them.

No, real impressions yet. I've had mine for only a couple of hours. I'm not all that articulate with reviews, but I can tell almost right away if I am going to like something. So far I know I am going to like this headphone.

(Assuming that the cable is basically the same as every other headphone cable)

Cut the 6.3mm jack off. Measure the DC resistance between the cables to see which of the 4 tiny cables lead into which cup. Usually they are colored, so you might not even have to measure. If none of the 4 cables are colored (unlikely), you might not know which is which channel and which one is the + and -. In this case, I would assume that trial and error is the best idea.
Usually the + is colored and the - is white/not colored (at least that is the case with my HD800 and HD600)

There are tiny numbers on the XLR jack. In my case (probably in every case) they are like this:
    1- L+ = green
    2- L- = white
    3- R+ = red
    4- R- = white
When viewed from behind the numbers go clockwise: 1 is top right and 4 is top left.

To the others: Please correct me if I made a mistake.

To be more specific the solder point marked with a red line will always be the + while the underside marked side is the ground.

Put some Ebony cups from E-MU on mine:

Seem to have a bit more sub-bass. A much flatter bass response, without the THX00's 125 Hz peak, more like a strong bass plateau from 50Hz to 150 Hz. Midrange and treble seem to be a bit less peak-y. Seems like the "U shape" is a bit less jagged than the stock mahogany. But overall they still sound mostly the same, the difference in sound is pretty subtle.

I think it's fair to assume that the Purpleheart cups will have a very similar signature to the Ebony cups. I believe purpleheart wood is almost as hard as ebony, both of which are much harder than Mahogany. Wow those Ebony cups look beautiful though (and I love no branding). Here's to hoping that the Purpleheart cups look that good! Also, some people have called the TH-X00's a bit sibilant. Do the Ebony cups affect the sibilance at all for you when compared to the Mahogany?

The hardness is closer to Rosewood than ebony. So expect it to sound like THX00 with rosewood. Which is find more V than mahogany but closer sounding to the mahogany wood than the ebony.

Be extremely careful with the purple heart. They will turn black in direct sunlight in a year or two if left in the sun for a very long time.

Thanks for the advice! I must say that I love the idea of an evolving headphone. From what I've seen the dark brown/black of old and oxidized Purpleheart still looks pretty cool (almost chocolaty).

IMO I find it neat. Having the wood change over time would be a fun subtle and fun experience.

I guess I better be careful. I have a habit of laying all my headphones outside in the backyard from 11am to 6pm during the California summers.

I saw that a user on HF recabled these using SMC connectors, but I haven't seen any interior shots.

Would SMCs fit in the stock location without modifiying the interior of the headphone?

It'll fit without modifying the headphones.

Sorta off-topic here, but it seems like open-backed headphones with the fostex bio-cellulose drivers can be bloody good basshead phones:

Teaks with no cups on, that is a damn strong bass response, especially for a dynamic...maybe Will could do something with Fostex on these?

Im actually working on a TH-600 with TH500RP cups. Gonna post some teasers over at HF too. The bass is ridiculous, The mids are in your face, and the highs are very well extended, Almost too much... but I have done ZERO dampening or tuning. Strictly just getting the cups on, with ZERO mods to either cup. and fully reversible. It actually works. Fostex must use a certain mounting template so its consistent across their line. No cups, screws, plate anything were hurt doing this.
