I've done all the SBAF mods except the foam hole. I intially did a foam hole but bought a new foam pad as I didn't like all the hairs that got onto the driver, causing driver rattle and stuff.

Maybe I just have a worse pair? Idk, the subbass distortion is very clear to me. I get it both with the analogue bass boost with AMB M3 as well as with digital EQ.

I'm thinking about modding my HD650 since there probably won't be a headphone worth buying for a while by the looks of it. Would appreciate if somebody could list all of the approved mods along with the changes that comes with it.

If I where you I would do these first.

Also take one for the team for science*

    1. Dynamat Extreme on the back and do a comparison.

2 *Don't remove the foam behind the driver. Instead cut a hole in the foam for the vent.* (I just have to know how that sounds.)

If you don't like it you can just remove the spider cage and foam and it will be the usual mod.

    3. Don't bother with coin hole mod until later.

I've recently modded my new HD 650s (rear foam + spider removal w/ dynamat) and I've noticed the treble seems to be a bit harsh and fatiguing on my ears. Any advice?

I've figured out the problem. Changing from DirectSound to WASAPI on my player (MusicBee) seems to have got rid of most of the treble glare. Hmm. Exclusive mode is pretty annoying though especially when I want to watch YouTube videos and other things.

For glare or other slight treble issues, you can try some drawer liner over the silver mesh and under the foam. Try K240 foam too. It helps.

Make sure your pads are new, and increase clamp if needed to help boost the low end and smooth treble slightly.

The right tube amp with your choice of tubes and other components helps.

What I believe it is is a mixture of a slight ~5Khz and >10Khz bump (somewhere around 12-15K). All of these things can help if you've already done the spider removal.

Allright so there's Dynamat Extreme, Coin mod and foam mod. Can you explain what changes in sound each one of those will provide?

I'm gonna take one for the team and do what you're suggesting if I'm gonna do the foam mod anyways :) But first I need to know what changes the foam mod will make!

    Thanks.

less veil, more clarity, less dampening.

Based on my experience with other gear, I don't think changing the music mode would noticeably affect the treble glare. More likely a slightly different pad position or maybe brain burn-in.

I agree with this, mostly due to Sennheiser's own tuning. From the link:

I've noticed increased fatigue after modding the HD650s such that listening to the HD600 (stock) and even (in some ways) the HD800 (SDR) is easier on my ears. Can't shake the feeling that removing the foam on both sides potentially messes up the tuning at those frequencies.

I never really heard much of a notch there. Have always heard this glare that's particular to the HD650, not the HD600 (albeit the 600 was rather hot in the upper-mids, which bothered me more). IME doing all of the mods help, but there's a reason I went with the drawer liner and K240 foam coupled with the right amp and tube selection. With that, there's really nothing the stock HD650 does better.

Even though I didn't use drawer liner after the other basic mods, it was just a tad bit harsh and bright, but replacing the front foam and then doing the coin mod in the K240 foam smoothed it out just enough for me.

I did the coin mod on the stock foam (I don't have the K240 foam yet) and it somehow seemed to remove some of the lingering traces of glare that fatigued my ears (I thought it was meant to increase treble!). My concern now is how to prevent dust/hair from getting into the hole in the coin mod onto the drivers without messing up the sound. Any suggestions?

I've actually been worrying about this too... I live with two of the fluffiest cats you'll ever meet and fear of getting fur on the drivers has prevented me from doing the coin mod so far. IIRC solderdude mentioned using some sort of liner as a acoustically transparent cover over the driver but I've never seen any pics.

What I did was I order 2x cheap chinese inner foam discs (it also came with pads) and put it inside the grill. see 3rd picture in the link below.

So all of the mods enhance treble?

Allright, then I'm not sure if I should do the mods at all. Wasn't there a mod that tweaked the bass though?

do the spider removal and dynamat extreme those don't affect the treble. dynamat makes the bass more solid and slightly louder.

I'm gonna do the dynamite for sure then. What does the spider removal do exactly?
