Which headphones did you listen with? I found the amp very musical with the HD600, which I cannot say of many SS amps.

Goodness. Well, this is surprising to hear. In that case, I can't wait for at-home impressions with the multibit DACs.

Abyss (modded), HD800 (modded), TH-X00. Maybe an HE-500 early on. The Jotunheim throughout the years has always been my favorite Schiit amp. I've always asked Jason if I could sneak a listen to it, in whatever form it was, whenever I've dropped by Schiit HQ. Jason knows I love it. I suggested that he price it at $1000 as a same footprint companion to the Gungnir Multibit - a solid-state alternative to the warmer sounding Mojo 2.

The only caveat is that it's Schiit house sound (the warmer Lyr and Mojo 2 are exceptions to that). So people who prefer a warmer, mid-lusher, or laid-back sound should probably stay away. Run a crappy headphone with treble spikes and you'll hear that. Run an expensive headphone with strange treble timbre issues, and you will get that. From the Yggdrasil, with a well behaved headphone, it was pretty amazing.

Yeah, $500 is pretty tight. Entry level, no doubt.

That's what I suspected when I played with the source briefly. The amp seems really transparent and I think most people are judging the built in DAC.

I caved and bought one. It made sense for me to grab this one. I like it as a transportable for work and meets. I like it with darker headphones like my 650. It would even work well as a balanced pre-amp for my dual mono stack. And hey, I just like new schiit.

I wonder if the Jotun did cost $1000 whether the impressions would be better.

After reading Marv's impressions, I may have to buy one just to compare with my Rag. (The Jontun is also a lot easier to lug to shows/meets than a Rag.)

What? No. As a Swede I think you're insane. It is pronounced almost exactly as you'd expect in English. (Either that or I'm insane and can't speak English) Here is a video of some Swedish girl pronouncing some of the more important names events and places from Nordic mythology. Jotunheim at 3:54 She has a bit of an accent and it's far from the greatest, most organized video I've seen but you bastards need to see it anyway! Stop butchering my heritage god damn it.

Other things you bastards need to learn: 1:19 Ragnarök 2:20 Asgård (Asgaard) 4:40 Yggdrasil 4:49 Bifrost.

Multiple people on HF have already written the Joti off as "just another mid-fi amp". Most without having heard it.

The real question to ask here is will the topology work with tubes or with a hybrid design?

I trust Marv's ears. If he says that the amp portion is between mjo2 and rag...and that he actually prefers it to the rag, then that's all I need to hear. Bring it on!! I hope it makes it before the mini meet on Saturday.

Yep, Marv has heard this one quite a bit. I don't think he's ever heard the DAC, though.

(Marv, the production version changes two things from what you've heard: 10000uf caps to 15000uf caps in the main power supply, and resistor bias to diode bias for the output stage to make it more thermally stable. Plus making l/r correct, a non-humming transformer, and other boneheaded engineering things.)

I'll get one to SBAF as a loaner, if you want.

The Jotunheim did wonders for my ETHER-C. Can't wait to hook it up to Yggdrasil and hear what it sounds like at home!

And without full information--for example, like the fact that the Elear and Utopia had single-ended cables only.

It doesn't matter, though...a lot of people sniffed at the Yggdrasil when it first appeared, and gave lukewarm reviews.

It is literally impossible to do this in the Jotunheim chassis size. It's packed--and there's no room for more taps on the transformer, nor another transformer, for a proper high voltage tube supply, let alone the high current supply for the tube heaters.

@schiit - is there anything more about the new topology you can share that wasn't already stated in the last chapter? Could there be matching pivot point monoblocks for penultimate power?!?! =)

This is what I didn't get. Didn't they have aftermarket cables (at least the ones in the picture did)? So why not just get XLR terminated ones?

The topology is certainly extensible to higher power applications.

Thanks for this. I'm thrilled that Bifrost is actually pronounced Beef-roast!

Can't decide if the emphasis here should be on "literally impossible" or "Jotunheim chassis size."
