Though at the end he was saying you don't need super expensive cables, and the "cheap" $360 ones sounded the same or better.

PortaPro + DAP + Prince's "Purple Rain". 320 kbps is enough, FLAC is better and you only need about 100 Dollars Euros for the Clip Plus and headphones. Foobar2K is free. Beat that...

That was incredibly waffly; I say that as a bibliophile. It started well, but seemed to lose direction (like certain posters here who post pages-long "impressions").

Longform pieces are fine when the content can sustain them. It couldn't here.

I feel the same way. The suspicious mentioning of random audio gear with price tags/retail value is a bit too much.

It had a few anectodal observations, but you can tell that Denby is out of his element. He does reveal a few interesting thoughts, but the MQA comments are hilarious. Also, this is a short read by NYer standards :D
