This must routine to the old hands (not implynig @Hands is old!), but what do I need to replace here, and can I go on using them before I do...

Is this foam part of the pad or a separate part?

Looks like this is wear rather than a tear. Just call me Abrasive Ears!

You can totally use them still, it's just foam. If you order new genuine earpads, they come with more of that foam.

It’s just the foam disc. Part No.: 049789 They cost peanuts to replace, serving as dust protector and a key ingredient in the HD6x0’s stock presentation.

You can potentially replace that part with something a bit more... permeable to allow more air to come through, by the way.

That is, if you'd consider modding the headphone at all. Otherwise, I think you can find replacement foam pads on eBay or Amazon.

    Part No.: 049789 ... GBP0.89. New pads GBP32.76.

I prefer the sound of 89p, but it is out of stock. Anyway, have to look to India source, or replacing with something else as @Bill-P suggests. I guess Google is my friend! Or wait, ISTR this site has a comprehensive HD600 thread. Search Here First!

I never thought of modding these 'phones. But if I did, it would be for... more treble

Thanks @Bill-P. Probably my lazy answer will be to replace the Senn foam.

In an ideal world, if I was to undertake a moddification, the aim would be to achieve a more balanced sound, but I don't have balanced hearing. Actually, I found the HD600s pretty "balanced" even before my hearing took another turn for the worse.
