I don't like macs, but an old whateverbook is one of the easiest ways to get fanless or nearly so laptops.

A 2.5" portable HDD with 500gb is cheap if all the ones you find are smaller.

PC laptops tend to be noisy unless they're new or ultrabooks, and old ultrabooks are a bit of a crapshoot.

All Mac laptop outside of the ultraportable MacBook have fans.

    Stop making computer recommendations.

Great. I’d love a Mac. But I would like to stay with Foobar. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Wife dropped her iPad today. So my budget has been reduced.

I'll probably be lynched for suggesting it, but Surface Pro 3 w/ Intel i3. Put a 400gb sd card in, and you're set. http://a.co/atpGl2K

Just make sure you get a case that protects the corners, the glass cracks easy on corner drops.

Mine is an i5 and the fan rarely runs. Nice and quiet.

I’m only looking because my reliable Dell is making that hard drive sound when it’s old. Reminder to SBAF members, back up your digital files regularly. HDTracks doesn’t provide backup’s. Which is bullshit. IMHO.

I did. It was dropped on cement. Actually I had a double case around it. Wife doesn’t have good luck with with I-stuff.

If your Dell works right now, why not replace the hard drive with an SSD? Silent and fast, and with some cloning software and USB adapter should be an easy swap (assuming your Dell can be taken apart, which it most likely can)

I have a high end HP Elite with an ssd in it, just not sure how big it is, should I check, would sell in the $200 range.
