Anyway - Meze Empyrean, or Ether 2? Which of the two might please the "tone freak" in me? I feel its time for a new headphone...

Thought Yggdrasil A2 is da thing here... then read the "good audiophile DACs tend to start at $5000, or more" quote from Marv.

Most of the reason why the Yggdrasil is so loved is that it has excellent price-performance. It was kinda obvious reading some of the posts that there were better DACs around, only they were "f**k you"-level value.

The Yggdrasil A2 is about the most I can ever see myself spending on audio gear this lifetime, so to see something /in its range/ that competes is kinda exciting. I'm sticking sub-$1k for now though.

@Lyer25 Sticking to sub-1k range for good might be the most reasonable move for the vast majority of audiophiles. Will be scaling down myself at least partially. I do have the money to stay higher... but the diminishing returns are too strong.

I'm almost certainly sticking to sub-1k DACs for the foreseeable future, and it should be obvious by now that "value" audio has been closing in on the higher-end, but I know myself well enough to admit that I'm going to keep chasing better amps and cans as they come. Besides, the hobby's always been about chasing the last fraction of a percent; it's just a matter of knowing when you want to stop at this point :P

I have the Dekoni Elite Velour incoming for the LCD2C, supposedly they are similar to the Audeze Vegans. Looking forward to the changes. Hopefully I can drop reveal for good.

Think I saw posts with graphs from cskippy, and also some direct comparo with vegans, suggesting Elite Velours should work well.

Anyway, the phone is not the last word in terms of speed/resolution and timbre is a bit less convincing compared to PMx2. Overall tone with vegans is world class though. Basically they replaced HE500 for me, being cleaner and more neutral with similar price tag.

The only accepted payment method is bank transfer (or face to face transaction) which is also a limiting factor. The amp seems stock (except for a replaced pot) and working fine.

To those missing rumbling subbass on Kenzie - 8ohm out is a significant upgrade over 32ohm. Kenzie vs Stratus now being a very even match.

Full tube amps are very natural sounding but the great ones ( = versatile, without large cons) are unfortunately also very expensive. The same can be said about NOS DACs. And now you pretty much know my story aka why I moved to high end even though I didnt really want to. :)

Looking forward to see how your audio journey is going to turn out!

Thankfully the journey itself is fun, save for dropping more cash than one expects on a regular basis. I've already got my eye on some nice SET amps that are on the reasonable side of "absurdly expensive", the only problem left being demoing at home. As for DACs, I'm happy with what I have for now, so I'll focus elsewhere before going deep-end which I remember was also your advice from some time ago :)

Oversampling options of Onyx w/ HQPlayer = great learning experience! 2x closed-form OS is a good NOSvsOS midway... but NOS is the magic.

Initial Onyx vs Modi Multibit comparo w/ Eitr: NOS/closedform OS difference is subtle, so are sonic advantages of Onyx. Guess I am lucky to be deaf?

I mean - the difference is there but its not like Modi Multibit is shit or Onyx is aggressively rolled-off. Both are very good DACs, Onyx being somewhat better. Anyway, NOS seems to be exactly what I was looking for soundwise (gentle, smooth, clean, natural) so I may keep Onyx despite it being absurdly more expensive.
