Tariffs on tubes have been on for a long time already. Ultimately the "handling" fee usually costs more than the import duty anyway.

@frenchbat into Canada from US the tariff schedule (unbelievable the detail to which items are specified in there) says zero. I think it was GST (which should only apply over $100, and these weren't close) plus brokerage. Will find out today when I pick them up.

Yep, GST + brokerage - because they were classified as 'Special' (Chapter 98 of the Canada Customs Tariff Schedule) rather than 'Electrical Machinery and Equipment and Parts Thereof' (Chapter 85), which would have excused the first $100. Note to self for future...
