Just realized my entire headphone setup is now comprised of MD/Schiit offerings. Thankful that great sound doesn't require great expense.

World's best selling vehicle, the Honda Super Cub, is coming to the states for $3,599 - or, less than a really nice pair of headphones.

You only see electric scooters here. There is a Harley Davidson dealership out in the most newly developed part of town but I’ve never seen anyone driving one.

Sometimes I feel silly listening to crappy recordings through a $3k chain... Thank goodness good music transcends the medium.

I love listening to terrible old recordings (e.g. "Back In The DHSS"/Trumption Riots EP by HMHB) on a decent chain. It was recorded on a portastudio above a chip shop, and sounds appalling, but the songs still shine through- and I can hear exactly how bad the recording and indeed the musical skills of the band were back then. I might be odd, though.

Also, a lot of things that just sound like a wall of mush on lesser gear resolve into their components more with decent gear, against expectations. Surely hearing more of the music is the object of the exercise?

@Kattefjaes I think you're on to something there... Even on the worst recordings, the improved imaging, decay, soundstage etc of better gear can sometimes help me hear through the muck a bit more clearly

I feel much the same when I switch from my expensive headphones to my HD600, or even my PortaPro’s. Those of you just starting out, start with these. The mega buck stuff is only a few percent better in the long run. Same with amps and DAC’s.

Well I agree there. I buy all my expenses with credit card and pay it back immediately for flight perks.
I just think if you are buying stuff you can't afford at that moment on credit, it is a terrible decision. Even if you're only a month away. Just save. Else you will always be living paycheck to paycheck

As a rule I don't pull the trigger unless I've got the amount I could pay upfront, but don't see the harm in spreading it out without interest on a short term. Probably not the best approach, but I certainly don't live paycheck to paycheck. But it's a good point you make in general.

Headphone modding is a slippery slope for me. Improvements to be had, sure; but the focus on sound is often focus lost on the music.

Anyone else have unbalanced ears? My right ear has a slight 2-4kHz emphasis that skews vocals slightly right of center. Drives me bonkers.

Does being able to see your nose drive you bonkers?

Give your brain a chance: it can make everything right for you. Otherwise, you need a balance control. They are for ears as much as rooms.

And, how do you know the vocalist was dead centre anyway?

@Thad E Ginathom it's the same deal if I switch to mono. for awhile I was convinced it was a series of poorly balanced headphones, but when I flipped the headphones on my head and the vocals still leaned the same direction I knew something was awry...

You can get test tones that play dead centre as well.

Speaker amps: the balance control. I can see why this might be thought unnecessary on a headphone amp, and I guess they are rare. Pandering to the idea that the buyers all have perfect and perfectly-matched ears :(

If it bother you enough, and your source is a PC... do it in software.
