*pats back* I know that feeling very well, haha. It's how I feel about my Klipsch, though I do still think I'll be wanting an HD58X for more chillax (cringes) listening.
I have an Adam A7 pair (+ Adam Sub8) - they're quite nice, but my apartment does them no favors. There's a huge spike @ 122hz (low B) that booms like crazy. ADI-2 helped here too, but I know it's only a band-aid. Hp's are cheaper & don't suffer from acoustics - I think I'm not going into speaker-fi just yet :)
Good question! HD800 isn't that F'd up generally to begin with. I'm mostly using subtractive EQ to fix that purposely bright tuning. I bet there are way more phase issues, reflections etc. with my monitors that should in an ideal world be dealt with acoustic treatment. A stock HD800 might have some, but not in the same degree. It's EQ is more about tuning the signature. Different problems.
I ask because I've always been more inclined to EQ headphones than my monitors as well (I have an Adam A5X/Sub8 setup so quite similar). I have a nasty 40hz spike in my room, and while I can't afford the extensive treatment it would take to fix it, careful placement of my listening position with the help of REW has helped a great deal.
I see there is some adam love here! I feel adams are great but a bit hyped on the top end, and i don't like the front ports which make it sound more bassy and can chuff. Its a colored sound for me. I used to own the A7X + sub10. If you DIY some room treatment, its affordable. Monitors own with better timbre, weight of sound, and soundstaging. I listen at very low volumes so room reflections seem less of a problem.
@Cellist88 I guess so! I've done a bit of DIY treatment (some mineral wool panels) and it goes a long way. I think reble is exaggerated for hifi but not mixing (measures pretty much flat for me). Smooth enough that I don't mind :)
