How do we know that you just don't like $300-$800 headphones in general? I prefer my planars to similarly priced Auteurs that are generally well received.

Were there common traits among them you didn’t care for?

I've been through the OEMs you listed as well, and am in the same boat. I will say, there is one I truly miss and want back - ZMF Vibro Mk2. They weren't TOTL by any means, but they did warm tone and smooth sound better than any other planar I've ever tried.

No big deal, Josh. It's simply a character flaw on your part. Nobody's perfect :P

You should try the Hifiman HE1000 v1 before you completely give up on them. It's within reaching distance used from what you paid.

Much more dynamic, layered & wider sounding than any of them.

It’s possible that some pricier planar might grab me, but my experience thus far doesn’t make me optimistic. It’s not a price issue, because there are plenty of similarly priced dynamics I prefer to competitor planars. (On the low end, give me the HP50 over the PM3 any day of the week.)

(On the low end, give me the HP50 over PM3 any day of the week.) It’s hard to generalize across planars with fairly different FRs (HE400 to Aeon), but if there’s a commonality it’s a sort of graininess in the treble relative to similar dynamics.

I’m not saying I’ll never buy a planar again (Garuspik’s looks intriguing, and I still have a pair of T-X0), but I’ve definitely discerned a pattern in which cans I keep.

Don't sweat it. You're not a planar guy in the same way that I'm not a SS guy. It's good to know what you like. Your wallet will thank you.

The PM-3 is the only headphone I regret selling. It’s not the best at anything but it was extremely comfortable and made very pleasant sounds that I enjoyed.

There's a good chance I'll give Garuspik's a chance as my next planar. They're damn sexy, which doesn't hurt their odds.

Hey @Merrick, have you tried the HP50s? If you liked the PM3s, I think you'd also like the HP50s, which can be had much cheaper (new now for $125ish). A steal, IMO.

@Josh83 I haven’t tried those, but I remember them being mentioned in the discussions about budget planars. Not sure I need them now, my longing for the PM-3 is more emotional than out of an actual need for them.
