Agree with this 100%. I found the Aeon Closed to sound completely dead compared to my hd650 and even compared to my SR007. The one LCD3 I tried had the same issue. They do tonal balance well but the engagement factor is missing compared to Dynamics.
Depends on which planar. Some are less efficient and require more power to come to life. Others are closed planars which can't be compared to open dynamics.
Maybe I've just never heard a good, well-amped planar then. The beefiest amp I've owned was likely the Mjolnir 2, and even it didn't seem to "wake up" the LCD-X or Ether I owned at the time. The LCD-X did sound better when cranked up, but still like everything was run through a 4:1 compressor.
I suppose at least the suspension stiffness needs to be assessed outside of optical and electrical means. Damping could be seen from transients. I will start taking hp engineering seriously when they show Klippel style analysis, lol.
