If serious, no thanks. I like being able to drive on public roads and all the other public benefits tax's help cover. Modern society would literally not function without taxes.
Society would function fine. Income tax didn’t exist until 1913 and since the size of government has exploded. Government ads layer upon layer of waste and inefficiency.
And a big F you to Florida voters who give themselves property tax breaks for being previous Florida home owners but new purchasers to the state get screwed. Save our homes cap is BS.
Canada has higher taxes but the money I spent on taxes in Canada to get health care in return didn't feel like theft. The money I spend down here to blow up other countries on bad or misinterpreted intel or to bail out the same deregulated banks that trashed the job market feels more like robbery. It's a matter of ROI to me.
Pre-1913 is not modern society. Complaining about taxes is fine, god knows we need real tax reform, but have a proven plan to replace them if you want them gone.
There is a monumental difference between wanting tax reform and wanting no taxes period. The former is doable, the later is impossible while still having a functioning country.
Taxation systems that are shaped by lobby groups, and feed into a government that is massively influenced by yet more lobby groups, might be closer to theft. This Florida example sounds like another example of interest groups.
I've lived most my life in countries with simple tax systems and reasonably effective public services, I can live with tax.
Occasional comments on SBAF about having to sell off audio gear to pay medical bills hammer home how lucky I am to live in such places.
I've had friend and family come down with strokes, cancer, what have you in different countries. Knowing that personal financial concerns were not overriding priorities at these times made me appreciate systems that work well.
Once upon a time, there was an old-fashioned idea. Governments provided services, etc, to people, and people paid tax to finance that. Then that got lost underneath a whole heap of tax-is-evil propoganda. It was a simple idea, and a good one.
Now, governments charge tax and /don't/provide the services. A simpler idea, and a bad one!
