Yowch. The lifemix thing kinda makes sense, I want to be able to hear my surroundings in event of emergencies, but that's what open-backs are for. Also, WTH is with the hard-panning music during the Zeos-esque sound demo? I do NOT relish the idea of messing with the mix.

Home use wireless headphones make sense to me and people will pay what they will, but this doesn't seem well-thought.

I believe lifemix is another marketing name of existing features (Sony call it "ambient control"; MS has something similar.). And it is largely different from openness of open back designs. Except extremely open estats or planars, open hps generally reduce trebles very significantly (due to physical reflection/absorption). Structure-wise lifemix or those things may be more like hearing aids.

Yep, the way they talked about it in the intro I was half hoping it'd be something like having the ability to toggle on a pseudo open-back feel but the sound demo was extremely disappointing.

Integrating a hearing aid into something like this is a novel concept. Hmm, well if they eventually make something interesting of it I'll let my wallet speak for me, haha

Try swapping the pads if you haven't already. Zach matches the pads to each side so if they were put on backwards you could have a channel imbalance.

How do you find the bass presentation in your chain? I've been a little concerned about some reports of it being a tad 'lean'. Looking forward to your impressions either way.

Kinda agree and disagree. To my ears, bass sounds just right (in terms of quantity and quality). The real problem seems that this dac is inherently bright and sterile (depending on downstream), which potentially makes bass reproduction relatively lean. Will see if 1421 changes over next a couple of days.. but I am 80% sure that it is a fundamental sonic character.

Sometimes it can be obvious that they're using an earlier generation tape than that equivilant 80s era CD. 80s era catalog titles can often have things ike tape warble too.

But all that tends to be negated by the fact that the remasters tend to be more compressed and use a delta sigma ADC for conversion.

Check out the hi-res remasters of Tom Petty’s catalog, he allowed them to be mastered with full dynamics. Similarly check out the “unlimited” remasters of Paul McCartney’s catalog (unlimited in this place meaning no limiting on dynamics as well).
