@Elnrik Yup, Windows machine. A+ was disagreeable and for some reason a hell of a lot louder without tinkering; volume-matched testing saw no differences with f2k so I figured all was well. Saw your comment on that one thread through and gave JRMC a shot, surprised myself since I was a "bits are bits going into a DAC" kinda guy.
Sigh. Yes (haha). So far less harsh highs (godsend with my headphones), less congestion in busy bits, and more definite images. Fuuuuuuuuuuck $60 I could buy vinyl with that, haha.
@Elnrik This whole black hole of a hobby is about chasing incremental returns after a certain point, might as well get used to it as I'm climbing out of mid-fi, haha. Now when I start spending $60 on /cables/... wait that's normal too? f**k.
Haha, at least there's a discount on newer versions...
I own JRMC and I use FB2k. They should sound identical, so I;d be inclined to think there's something more at play. I dislike JRMC for reasons other than it's playback FWIW.
@GoodEnoughGear I'm actually planning on setting up a blind test for myself with my sister's assistance sooner or later to confirm. I've the same mindset that as long as it's passing stuff through to the DAC with no hiccoughs then there shouldn't be an audible difference.
Yeah I did the same after I saw @Elnrik's comment as well and we've been having mixed results between my friends, but I do feel like JRMC has noticeably less congestion and better transients than foobar2000. To me JRMC closes the gap to my CD transport.
@famish99 I'm half tempted to just get a proper transport for what CDs I have and conveniently forget about streaming to keep the nervosa at bay, haha. Pricey/need restoration though. Glad to have corroboration, I'm not entirely crazy, but at the same time GDI.
I have like an old OPPO DVD player which is probably too shite for the high council, but beats the crap out of my Sonos or PC via HDMI so I can only wonder what an approved transport would sound like.
