Did not know the Zip was that expensive in Europe. It was $49 at launch I think. But there were sales and I bought mine for $40 from Amazon. Besides the substantial increase in price (in the US), it seems the M0 may have better specs and the Bluetooth deal is an important upgrade. Therefore, not exactly a Zip successor: Value oriented sub $50 very basic, cheap, beater player with half ass decent sound.
There are plenty of sub $50 basic MP3 players from all sorts of weird brands. But none I could say two things: stable and decent sound quality. Mostly unknowns. The Zip was somewhat stable, and it did not sound like ass. I can say the latest generation Sansa players sound like ass relative to the Zip and Clip. Which were not the last word in fidelity, but were IMO decent.
Based on what I've read I feel M0 > Clip+: Two way bluetooth, 32/384k support, DSD support, Gesture control, ES9218P dedicated DAC (Clip+ had what was integrated). Clip+ had problems with 48 kHz BTW. It is IMO good value for todays market. Definitively would like to hear more about it.
There is also an M1 it seems. And I think it costs close to the same. Specs say that this is an AK4452 based player w MAX97220 amplifier. Not sure how this one compares to the M0. Other than the M0.
EDIT: Seems like the M0 is newer and offers more power (2x!)
I unfortunately do not have a Clip Zip anymore. Would have been great too compare! I have an iPod shuffle ( the tall white one with 512mb) So would love to hear your thoughts @insidious meme
