I think the problems with the X1 were fixed with a firmware update. You can try it out and send it back if you don't like it, watch out with the hdr screen it's color range is higher and colors can look over saturated. Other then that make sure TLP and Thermald are installed and enabled and it should be good.
I have X1 with HDR screen and I can say the screen is gorgeous although pricey. I also installed Linux in dual boot. https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Lenovo_ThinkPad_X1_Carbon_(Gen_6) - the information here contains all current issues under Linux and possible solutions/workarounds.
One thing to note is that the HDR screen is high density so hi-dpi issues are possible since most Linux DE don't support fractional scaling well. I have 2x scaling in my Plasma DE and it still looks good although something about 1.6 would look better. I tried 1.6 scaling and got a lot of issues. Gnome 3 can do fractional but it is experimental now and only under Wayland.
When I shopped for a compact laptop I considered either X1 or XPS13. Decided to buy X1. I just can't accept the location of the camera in XPS13 - absolutely horrible design decision in my opinion.
I would get the X series Thinkpad that isn't the X1. I have an older X260 with the extra battery, small and killer battery life. I think they are on the X280 series now.
Im more concerned with which one will be both a good laptop, but also which one works best with Ubuntu, those developer edition XPS 13s look great though, thanks for the tip!
In other news, i decided to switch mpd from a system daemon to a user process this afternoon so that I could also audio from other things when I wasnt using mpd. ended up having to spend like 2 hours figuring out why all my audio stopped working and alsa couldnt find my output device anymore -_- nuked the whole dsp plugin and started over...linux is awesome
On my Dell rant. Dell Ultra Sharp monitors are good, maybe Latitudes are good too. I have seen a few of these older XPS fall apart. Was not impressed, no one is sayin there isnt room for improvement.
I use an X1, and it's great (linux, with a Win10 VM guest for MS Office). Everything is great- except that you sometimes need to power it off manually. Less of a pain to netboot than the XPS13 too.
