    If you buy a bunch cheap ones they might just last as long as one fluke. Then again my current cheap one is 4 years old and going strong.

    My Fluke 8026B was inherited from my father. It actually works fine still, but the screen needs to be pressed down to get a clear reading on the display. I will attempt to get the cheapest Fluke I can find.

    I have seen the fault you describe. You can try disassembling and cleaning the LCD contacts with isopropyl alcohol (IPA, not beer). It can be a bit fiddly, depending how the glass LCD panel is retained and aligned. If you were going to bin it, then you have nothing to lose by trying.

    LCD fixture is soldered down to the board at multiple points. Too much trouble for what its worth

    That's a shame. Obviously different from the 75's and 87's that I was familiar with.

    Oh, by the way, check all the solder connections of the display module with a magnifying glass. Look for "dry solder joints" that can be simply resoldered. The tell-tale sign is a circle in the solder fillet surrounding the pin. Google "dry solder joint".
