So they either need to be able to go outdoors and hang out with other cats, or you need 2. Unless you get them adult already, but that has its own difficulties.
I've got some 18" woofers, totally exposed, where the bottom of the woofer is near floor level and within easy reach of cats. One cat wanted to chew the gasket foam, and some bitter apply spray applied w/q-tip took care of that. He still puts his paws on the cone, but the cone is unaffected by this, and he doesn't try to scratch it. If he did, I guess i'd get an ugly grille for it.
Get a cat tree and make sure you play with it. Or get two and a tree.
Mine have little interest in my gear. The speaker grills have never been touched.
One of my cats loves to sit on top of my speaker, and will jump about three quarters of the way up the speaker, then push against the grill for a second smaller leap up to the top. There is a bit of an indentation on the grill as a result but neither of my two cats have ever scratched the grill or shown any interest in the woofers when they’re exposed.
More worry about grills. They no scratch woofers ever. Let the cats out to kill or be killed. It's part of being a cat. Five-year survival/return rate is 50% for our cats. Keeping cats indoors is like preventing Germans from assembling themselves into well-honed and precise industrial, financial, or war machines.
I was concerned my cat might think my Magneplanars were big scratching posts. Magnepan even suggests using cat repellent spray in their docu. I just play mine loud enough and often enough that my cat is clearly afraid of and avoids them.
If you provide the cat with several decent alternatives for scratching and cover them with catnip, s/he will leave the furniture and speakers alone. However, as a heat seeking missile, your warm components are a target for sitting or laying.
