Works pretty well. Measuring with a thermometer, the air coming out is 4-5 degrees (f) colder than the ambient temperature.

Hope you are putting regular ice inside

As long as the ambient humidity is low, you are good to go.

No ice inside, just water and a pump

Get some ice bro. Then you have heat melting the ice and then more heat evaporating the water. Cooler air. We had an evap cooler win I was a kid. When it got over 100 F my dad would dump a couple of bags into it. Helped. Or sometimes a block of ice if he could find it.

I put a tray of ice in, air temp only dropped 1 degree

I wouldn't want to insult your intelligence, but I'll say it anyway. Just don't put in dry ice, even if it's at -80 C. Same amount of energy (cooling potential) as regular water in the end, but it could kill you. Seen some folks do this, stupid beyond measure. It takes a LOT more energy to evaporate water then to warm it, but it also takes a lot to melt it. Strange. Ice should be better.

@Ardacer Good point. I’ve read the same thing. As to the ice, it has to melt before you get the real cooling effect. Plus a tray might not be enough. Or the laws of thermodynamics have let us down.

Nicely made! We have machines here that work on that principle. They call them desert coolers. But they are only good for less humid parts of the country: the last thing Southern India needs is moisture pumped into the air, even if is cool. Devices for horses. Or courses. Or something.

@spwath So there’s your review of thermodynamics for the day. Doubt very much if you needed it. I’m listening to the 1812 Overture from HDTracks, the Merc Presence. Great dynamic range. I’m worried what will happen when the real cannons go off. Just downloaded it.

Yeah, next semester I have thermodynamics II, so always good to review! I'll try more ice later, see what happens.

1812. Decent recording. It was 1955 after all. The real cannons are worth getting a copy. Do Discogs etc. and get a CD. Better deal.
    Good luck with Thermo II.
You might want to try getting a block of ice and breaking it up to fit your invention. If you can find a fan that moves more air may also help. Some day soon you will have A/C. Hang in there. And stay hydrated.

Do have ac here at home, just doesn't really work in my bedroom. At college though, no ac, I'll have to bring this.

In New Mexico you typically find evaporative ACs. Instead of a pool of water they use filters covering the side holes that you presoak (we always had to start the water pump about 20-30 minutes before turning on the fan).

But yeah, you need very low humidity for them to work.

    Nicely done!

Yeah, this would probably work better with lower humidity, but still cools small area.

I don't think you need college thermodynamics for this one. I was lousy at the mathematical sciences (good at biology!) but even I remember "latent heat of evaporation" in school physics. At least I think I do: did I get that right? All about the extra energy needed to change the state of a substance instead of just its temperature, right?

Yes. And it's much larger than just changing the temperature.

Well it works even better now, wwith the dry air from the house air conditioning. Room temperature measured by multimeter (which measures a bit too high, but consistently) is 80 f. Air from the bucket is 70 f. that's 10 degrees cooler!!!!

Yeah, with just a bucket, cheap pump, some material of some sort, a large computer fan, and a wii power supply, I can cool my air using much less electricity than a traditional air conditioner.

So. Your next step is to invent an efficient carbon dioxide scrubber. Piece of cake. :) Glad to hear you are cooler. I live and grew up in the Sacramento Valley. No A/C as a kid. It sucked unless you were in a pool.

Usually not too hot here in upstate ny, and do have A/C, but 90 tomorrow and next day, and the airconditoning works in every room of the house other than mine, where it sucks.
