Too many early (old) reports of this setup being a massive security hole for me to have ever pursued this configuration. Home router manufacturers are ropey enough with security around their core functions than to chance it with tangents like USB shares.
I'd sooner just set up a share via a Pi/NUC if I wanted low power network shares.
Hmm, I haven't heard anything about that in a while. I'm not sure how it can be a security risk if it's only accessible via lan. If you are trying to set up a FTP server without DDNS and a VPN you are asking for trouble, but just for in-home streaming I'm not too worried about it.
I've seen occasional reports like this over a ten year period. Sometimes the vulnerability is on the WAN side. I don't really follow this stuff, it's just put me off ever using a home router for anything beyond firewall/routing.
Going to try it out today. Main reason is right now all my music is hosted from a shared folder on my desktop PC, which has a 3TB raid1 just for media. I want to be able to put it to sleep when I'm not using it but I can't stream music while it's sleeping.
It's a pretty nice router for being 2+ years old. Its a Netgear Nighthawk R6700 rev2. It has a dual-core 1ghz processor, so probably fine for hosting a file system that I can edit from my desktop and access from my RPi to stream music.
I had to order a new external HDD, the one I have isn't compatible with the router (needs a driver) since it's an internal 2.5" HDD/SSD WD dual drive in an external enclosure.
