@DigMe Not sure if that would have any effect.

We have been going over this with StuffJones over emails for a few days. At this time it's hard to say if it's some issue on side of Q1 or just something on the PC side, as it was tested on only one computer.

We are working with our US dealer on some way how to fix it for him.

Use push mode. 24 bit is fine. You don't really need dither. Only use that dither setting if playing back a 24-bit file and selecting 16-bit.

I’m assuming OI affects the BA drivers in the Solaris and not the DD driver. Maybe it’s shelving the upper mid or treble to where you like it? I don’t think I’d describe Sony sound as rough from memory

Given that the Pixel XL has about 4.8 ohm OI, and I don't think Google has really put that much thought into audio since then, maybe the 3A is somewhere in that ballpark? I do prefer Solaris out of higher output impedance devices as well. My AK120 has 3.5 ohm OI, for instance.

Not weird at all. To me, ZX300 tends to make the upper-mid a bit hotter and the bass a tad leaner compared to stuff from Hiby or WM1A or even an iPhone. It's something I've noticed with both Andros and FDX1, a bit worse with the former. For something that has tube-like organic lows, its upper-mid and treble is quite solid-state-like.

I miss his passion towards audio but I believe his passion is being used to help others in new ways now.

Why aren't there any IEMs that use two DDs (for bass & mids) and one BA driver for treble? Plays to the tonal strength of each transducer.

@Kunlan. Didn't the old TDK IEMs also have two DDs? They were pretty good for the money back in the day as I recall.

I'd love to see an IEM with a CA DD for bass, an Aurisonic Rocket micro dynamic driver for mids (best IEM mids I've heard) and an Andro BA implementation for up top. Use the two DDs for 80-90 percent of the FD. Just use the BA for that last bit of extension and avoid most timbre/coherence issues.

A practical example. If you're starting off in HPs with a ~3k budget, which option would you go for:

        a) DNA Starlett + Schiit BF2 + HD6XX
        b) Schiit Modi MB + Asgard + ZMF Verite

For me, option a) is much more appealing. You've got an amp and DAC that will do any headphone justice as your taste evolves and budget grows.

      4. Griffon
        Griffon
@Stuff Jones your option a is built upon the premise that HD6XX (or the HD6xx family) is a competent transducer. With a 3K USD budget I'd rather have a used pair of HD800SDR, get a competent sub-1200, SBAF-approved amp, and a used Gungnir MB. You have a combination electronics that is a.) not far away from Starlett+BF2, and b). maybe even more versatile.

For a simple field recording setup, I recommend a wearable binaural mic into a cheapo recorder. Simple, effective, sounds great, cheap. I use Soundmann OKM + Yamaha Pocketrak PR7. Full setup under $300 and sounds great! I've worked on hundreds of production sound gigs though I wouldn't consider myself a music industry insider.

I mean, it's binaural, not multitracked - no real ability to do extensive DSP afterwards, and headphones only. But aside from that, it sounds amazing! Full bandwidth, all of the spatial cues remain intact. Possibly a bit diffusive if you're sitting far from the performers but that's just a matter of where you're located while you're wearing the mic.

For me, HD580>HD650>HD600. Basically because I'd rather have a little too much midbass (HD650) than a little too much upper mid (HD600), but OG 580 is more or less right in the middle of both of those two things.

Yes, but for whatever reason (maybe just the baffle/housing or worn pads) it sounds smack in the middle. Also some of the older drivers sound a bit smoother on the top end so maybe it's just unit variation from what I've heard (new 650s and 2002 580s, and late 00-s 600s)
