What did you expect. These speakers are 83db senstivity which probably translates into 79db efficiency. I'd rather run the 400W Crown pro amps into these.
I knew it would be a bit underpowered and probably not up to the task, but decided to give it a try. People seem to like LS3/5a variants with low WPC amps, and Graham recommends 25-50 watts, so I thought might almost get them there for a nearfield setup. With 11ohm impedance though Aegir is certainly well under that. Alas, everything but the vocals feel pretty anemic and not filled out.
2nd person trying an Aegir with LS3/5a type speaker and a no go. Bad matchup. If they’re anything like my LS6s, as @purr1n says, those things need mucho powero to sound dynamic. Herb Reichert may be a decent writer, but he can be full of shit sometimes too.
Herb said the LS3/5a was a good pairing with Aegir. He also said they were a good pairing with the Akitika as well, so take with a grain of salt @Inoculator. If that doesn’t work you may want to look at Marv’s suggestion of the Crown, or at least a Vidar. Some people are also liking the XTZ Edge 300 class D amp lately but I’ve not heard it.
Thanks for all the suggestions! I am certainly making my way through Herb's suggestions. (Interested in the PrimaLuna but $$$) I will add one nuance though, Herb liked the Aegir with the Harbeth P3ESR, which while it has LS3/5a DNA, it is a different monitor, and 6ohm rather than 11/15ohm like most LS3/5a. Of course @saint.panda also spoke to that pairing not being great and the vidar being a much better match.
I will also add I don't blame Schiit at all, I knew what I was getting into. I already had an Aegir so I figured I would just give it a try. When I contacted them about the pairing and trying it out they were very helpful but honest.
