I don't get it either, to me it just paints the whole movement/protest in bad light, and the extremism and terrorism just turns people away from sympathizing with the underlying cause.

It's undirected anger after years of peaceful protests resulting in very little change.

That being said, there's also been many reports of racists accelerationists damaging property and blaming the protestors

I'll even go "there" - why is the media saying this is about race when this perception is mostly due to the media's lack of coverage of police brutality against most peoples with lighter skin (white + some asian/hispanic/middle eastern people). Have always known brutality wasn't limited by skin color but found out recently that police commit violence at slightly higher rates against white people than any other group.

@fp627 - You are wrong. Blacks are 27% of police murders while only 13% of the population. They get killed at a higher rate.

@fp627 is that statistic in absolute terms, or with relative demographics taken into account? (i.e. it's not surprising if absolute since there's a lot more white people out there proportionally, but if it does take into account relative demographic proportions it would be pretty surprising)

@Cspirou What percent of violent crimes belong to each demographic? Are the police killing more people in higher crime areas? Are those "minorities" involved in more violent crime to begin with?

Let me see if I can find source again as I don't recall exact nuances of how it counted.

I do know that the number of *unarmed* white people killed in 2019 was 67 or 68 or so while *unarmed* black people was about 12 (Raw numbers - but this roughly matches the US as a whole).

Also what JK said - Total deaths do not account for factors where it may have been "rightful" (or at least not blatant abuse / brutality). I totally understand police shooting someone who is shooting at them or committing a crime, etc. (But even then, I have a problem with how often police hit innocent bystanders and TAXPAYERS pay for it whereas we civilians would face manslaughter).

Anyways - enough tangent. I'm very disappointed a bad shadow has been cast on this movement as real police reform is needed. But when dumb things like this happen and the hard realities of police aren't addressed, makes reform too unlikely.

And on a parting note before things get too political, I'm sick of #black lives matter. It should be #ALL LIVES MATTER

Certain people must be fed up. I was not really informed about recent developments and then I started digging. Then you find out about people like Amy Cooper. A boiling point is about to be reached...

@JK47 The sole argument I see that makes sense to me is that "black lives matter" does not detract from "all lives matter" because the meaning is that "black lives matter *too*", and all lives cannot matter when a specific subsection thereof is treated unjustly. Bandying "all lives" around in response to BLM is seen as tasteless and dismissive.

But yeah, this is a sensitive and messy topic. Peace man.

@Lyander That is the exact problem. The enlightened West has ideals, human rights and beautiful words that describe Utopia. Then these beautiful words meet reality and you find traces of colonial and imperial times. Old beliefs and stereo types. Certain people talk about lesser treatment but it does not make sense. Yet it still happens and then you have to ask: who is lying?

    We all have stories.

@JK47 Possibly, but if this were a simple thing then hopefully would be resolved soon. People tend to read into innocuous statements on divisive things, which is what I think happens when there's vitriol in response to "all lives matter". All humans DO matter, but not everyone is subject to the same discrimination at all times.

@Deep Funk only word I'd ascribe to Utopia is treble TBH.

@Deep Funk forgot my history, had to look that up. Giggled.

Colonialism is alive where I am, no clue if true elsewhere. You're either acquiescing to influence of 300+ years of subjugation or actively working against it, but even when you force yourself to oppose it the impetus of action is that same subjugation. That's why Filipinos seem to be very STRONGLY pro-PH at times, I feel.

Take care of yourselves, all. Discussion where people disagree without being dicks is cool, would hate if anyone who wasn't actively seeking fight were caught up in one. There's a lot more to it than that, but keeping it dumb for my own sake. lol.

selfish, immoral pricks are using the protest as an excuse to steal and destroy property. As not all cops are bad, not all protesters are righteous and fighting for the real cause.

It's the responsibility of peaceful protestors to stop the bad seeds among them, like what happened in Santa Monica yesterday. I don't buy this infiltration by anarchists stuff. I've witnessed many a peaceful protests in my life.

BLM are terrorists. "Black on any other race" attacks are absurdly higher. There are never protests about the absurd high numbers of black on black killings. Obama's hometown is a prime example and yet he called a criminal his son.

BLM are simply lazy, violent useful idiots who are out to seek gibs, instant gratification and blaming their shortcomings on others.

If history is any indicator, when there are riots the GOP/Conservatives comes out ahead in elections. Happened in LA after 92, NYC twice, and Nixon I think twice. MN is now officially a toss up state.

My observation is that the large majority of people protesting this are NOT destroying property. Also, there seem to be both right and left wing instigators infiltrating these protests. Just like everything else don’t let the few condemn the many.

Those 3 dudes who tried to break into the Santa Monica REI store sure didn't look like left or right wing instigators. The problem is that not enough people behind these protests or of influence are stepping up and asking people to stop with the violence. There's either tacit acceptance of the violence or denial. Their cause can only be won with the hearts of others, not with rage.

OK, doesn't change that the large majority of protestors in the US are not looting and the fact remains that there is strong evidence of left and right wing instigators. I agree it'd be great to see people stopping the violence but I also see that it's a complex situation with many unknowns.

Just kind of disturbing seeing a little skinny white girl stopping these three big thugs with hammers when all the likes of Lebron need to tweet is something along the lines of "c'mon bros, we are angry, but no need for this, and let's make sure it doesn't happen on our watch". It's not that that hard to bring people together. Folks need to step up.

@ChaChaRealSmooth Koreans never forget Koreantown after LA Riots. Can't trust the cops to protect your stores, so need to protect yourself. When I was a kid back in NYC a lot of Asians where with the White/Jews/Italian voters in getting Rudy as Mayor back in the 90s. The one story people don't want to talk about is the # of Asian leaning Conservatives, which it is very interesting to me.
