I've experienced similar before, or so I think, and it could just be that I've not listened to this in a couple weeks (Epica - The Phantom Agony), but I could have signed off on a written affidavit that this was played faster.
Could you have been playing a 48k recording at 44.1k?
96k at 44.1 makes one realise how much detail there is in the music. Sample rates are usually sorted out by the system, but on my computer this does not always happen, and sometimes I get the strange experience
I'm on an Android device and unless I'm mistaken everything on the platform gets up-or-downscaled to 48k unless tweaked; I'm using YouTube Music so unlike local player can't find settings to sort output through phone jack v. eternal DAC. That might be it?
@EagleWings glad I don't seem to be losing my marbles then— wonder what the cause might be, underpowering the headphones more than the possible sampling weirdness?
I don't think so. For better or worse, 'phones are going to play the signal they get. Can't imagine them retarding or accelerating it --- whereas I can imagine software sample-rate converters doing so, because maybe they are not doing their job correctly.
Perfectly sound (hah) reasoning, but at the same time I'm curious to get measurements of how much power the Samsung S9 puts out because there's a definite element of "mush" and loss of definition with the Sennheisers.
Either way, I do agree that 3.5mm on phones have always been a convenience thing more than something to really build a system around.
could you get an external dac/amp? So you go digital out of the phone?
I have a GO thingy, but actually can't be bothered to use it. HD600s sounded ok to me out of the phone but very limited volume.
Have something I forget the name of for my occasional travels. May not be great but it will do. Worst aspect is that, although "closed," they don't keep out external noise. But... travels are occasional
Would be double amping so not ideal, but I do have a very cheap 1 dollar 3.5mm to RCA thing I could use, haha.
I get more than sufficient volume, but it doesn't have quite as much refinement in the sound, comes across as fairly mushy relative to Sunrise or G109A amps, not to mention the apparent slowness.
Travel not ideal nowadays no? Haha, but good to have just in case!
Does the S9 have a dedicated DAC? One thing I was continually impressed by was how good my CA Orions sounded coming out of my LG V30, so it could just be a poor implementation of the audio components/clock related fuckery on the S9?
Bit of a tangent but, if there's one thing I miss about Steve Jobs, its that he was pretty dedicated towards getting good audio out of mobile devices. Iirc he was a huge audiophile which isn't shocking. I'm sure he was turning in his grave a bit when Apple started to cut the 3.5mm port, and unfortunately all other manufacturers followed suit. Serious loss of convenience there from trying to push people into wireless.
@FallingObjects quick Google check says Cirrus Logic CS47L93, and yes it could well be the implementation thereof considering I'm on the gimped Exynos variant, haha. Funnily saw a WhatHiFi saying the timing on the phone sucks while looking this up, but I'm only now noticing it with the Senns: https://www.whathifi.com/samsung/galaxy-s9/review
@Thad E Ginathom haha, sounds like a fun project for when I can actually get stuff delivered, if only to the nearby post. Numbers of COVID cases still on the rise so that's pleasant (sarcasm).
