A great film indeed. Unfortunately, it's also very inaccurate. Mozart and Salieri were very friendly in real life and there is no evidence that Salieri killed Mozart. Salieri even taught Mozart's son after his death.
Salieri wasn't nearly as talented as Mozart but he wasn't a bad person. Quite the opposite. He was a very generous teacher, never charging for his services, and even taught Beethoven for a time. It's sad that the film has caused many to think of Salieri as a second rate murderous hack. It's simply not true.
The false rumor came largely from a spat between the Germans and the Italians. At the time, Italian opera conductors were refusing to do German operas in German, which greatly offended them.
while I'm aware of all this....I'm just enamored with the film. The direction, the acting, how the music is coordinated. How it can even make uneducated people feel the beauty of mozart's music.
I agree it is superbly acted and directed. The cinematography is exceptional as well. It's just unfortunate that a good man's name was dragged through the mud for the sake of entertainment. I think they should have made a fictional villain.
