    I also found I preferred the silver screen version of the HD 600. Not worth chasing the original black screen.

    My HD600 is black screen, dunno from what year. The transplant was into 6xx housing, which are all silver screens. Both housings were modded in the same way. The black screen does have an effortless smoothness about it, very buttery, cohesive, and once modded, less veiled than an unmodded silver screen. No measurable difference in FR.

    Just a bit more grip on transients on the silvers, and the bass has better tactility. Though the transitions between bass and mids and mids and highs on the black screen do feel a bit more even. Trade offs...

    Yep, at least over on Head-Fi most black screen impressions focus on positives compared to the silver screen. I had no trouble getting decent money for my black screen version.

    Part of it could be preference, but never underestimate the desirability of something long out of production. Vintage fountain pen prices are obscene.
