I have a friend who has around 3-4 different pairs of the HD580. He brought one into the store which I heard and it sounded a little hot on the top. He remarked the HD580 probably had the most unit variance of all Sennheisers.
Big yikes on that HE-60! That HD580 was the only one I had heard and I think even though it was a little hot on the top, I could enjoy it. Makes me curious to hear other HD580.
I think it was an HD565 I played with, and it was lean and somewhat bright. Adding more dense material to the baffle made it sound more like a modern Sennheiser.
I'll probably transplant the drivers to a silver screen, or do a partial baffle damper with microfiber cloth like with my other pairs. Maybe even cover the whole baffle with micropore tape, or stuff some acoustic wool in the little nooks on the rear side.
Now HD580 drivers in a 2020 silver screen: https://i.imgur.com/z7ko86Y.png definitely the best config without additional mods, though relatively speaking (sub level vs midbass level) the sub rolloff is worse. So maybe paper screen with some baffle mods will be the best of both worlds.
