Need a strong magnet for that, and strong cone, and other issues probably. Interesting idea though... Field coil aluminum cone vacuum box speakers

Err yeah having a proper vacuum in the enclosure might make it impossible to move diaphragms any since that could well end up ripping most materials to shreds. Also I'm far from being knowledgeable here but just intuiting it the amount of force necessary to overcome the forces acting "inwards" may be... formidable.

Yeah that is interesting, but words like "heart bass implosion" don't inspire confidence it it's hifi abilities. And I wonder to what point does it use a vacuum, doesn't say much there, I'll have to look more

Why not just fill the enclosure with a different gas actually? Fill it with carbon tetrachloride, and the speed of sound is twice as big, so the enclosure can be twice as small. Not sure what carbon tetrachloride is, but I'm sure that or some other gas might work and not blow up

This convo remindsme of why there was a great deal of research into refrigerants and why commercial cooling units compromise on efficacy for safety's sake (andhydrous ammonia = big boom). There may be something to using a specific gas or mixture thereof to regulate diaphragm motion in sealed enclosures though. Hmm, wonder if anyone's tested that out.

I was looking, it looks like Apple has a patent from a bit ago for a hydrogen or helium filled speaker. The patent goes on to cover a speaker that has a peice of uranium in it that releases hydrogen as it decays. Interesting idea to have some uranium in your phone...

LMAO, with all the cobalt, lithium, etc. in phones nowadays sure what's a little bit of uranium?

More seriously, I've no meaningful experience with speakers but based solely on headphone stuff it seems we're still a long ways away from being able to overcome the basic quandries of sealed enclosures just having a specific sound to them.

I'll have to look more into this, it seems very interesting. Maybe I'll see if I could do it for a research project for class...
