      Fiddling Around: Should I have upgraded my amp first, or my speakers? Luckily, I was able to do both. What if I had to pick? Hmmm?

        In my mind, you need to tailor the rest of your chain for maximum synergy with your transducers. So in any audio system, the transducers should be the first consideration and the first purchase.

        For me, the conundrum is…how do I know I /really/ like these speakers, if I don't like what I hear with gear I also like?

        chicken vs. egg.

        But generally I agree: match stuff with speakers.

        I'm doing the fiddling with headphones instead of speakers. New amps, awaiting new DAC. Keeping headphones for now, for something to be recognizable.

        I use both as appropriate. When wishing private listening headphones reign supreme. When I can rock out there is nothing like having Meyer Sound speakers and Bag End subs to make the neighborhood take notice. Then there is work mode for which studio monitors are most userful.

        They have the exact same remote/codes, unless you had the OG plastic one. But still, the same codes, so they will both control each other.

        In my experience, the IR blaster of the Schiit remote isnt that powerful. I programmed the Schiit remote into a Logitech universal remote and it makes a massive difference. Where the Schiit remote needed to be pointed directly at my Saga, the universal remote can be pointed to the ceiling and it still works.. So if your systems are not right next to each other it may not be much of a problem with the stock remote

        @Inoculator I think the SAGA+ added some warmth and sense of space to my system. I have a BK BT-140 solid state power amp from the 90’s. Moving from the SYS to the SAGA had an effect even my non-audiophile wife could hear.

        Unless your room is very large and/or you’re a long way away from them and listen very loud, you won’t need the gain from the Freya+ tube mode. A SYS will be fine. But Freya in all its tube glory will still sound better ;-)

      Dumb question: my Rotel RB-1582 MkII amp's gain is RCA: 26.5dB and XLR: 22.5dB. I thought XLR would have more gain? Help me understand.
      1. Azimuth
        Azimuth
        Most amps are not balanced all the way through. The balanced gets turned into SE. Why 4db difference is odd. In reality they are 11.5 dbu apart. My only guess is they are applying less gain to the XLR input because they know the signal coming in will be hotter.

        @rtaylor76 I think you're right: Input Sensitivity
        Line Level Inputs (RCA): 1.9V; Line Level Inputs (XLR): 3.0V.

        Not sure what this impacts: Input Impedance
        Line Level Inputs (RCA): 12kΩ; Line Level Inputs (XLR): 100kΩ
