A couple of hours later and I remember that they can be fatiguing. But, yes, they are loved. I've had them three years now - one small blemish on the left cup, which has long saddened me.
It's the 11kHz spike. The treble on those was actually more fatiguing to me than on the HP-3 surprisingly (cuz measurements), but the texture and spaciousness of presentation were addicting.
Mine... had more than a bit of blemish since I travelled with them, lol. There's a reason I didn't feel right selling them :P
Yes, I think the Ebony was said to smooth out the treble somewhat but that spike still does its thing. I always liked the way these headphones pulled off the neat trick of being closed backs, having the hefty bass, and yet still sounding spacious. Do you still have the HP-3?
Yep, they're my mainstays. The Klipsches can be bright at times with shrill recordings but I just happen to really love how they editorialise music— got lucky that apart from a bit too much treble (easily mitigated with upstream) they're just ace for me.
Of course I haven't tried every headphone ever, something may dethrone them yet.
It's good to hear when people find a pair of headphones that are enduringly satisfying to them. There's a danger of such headphones failing to get the recognition they deserve for standing the test of time.
I saw a pair of walnut HP-3s going for 650 USD recently. I don't have the pennies right now but it was tempting!
