Bought a sub for primary system. SVS “SB-1000.”

@Cryptowolf SVS has two similar models the PB-1000 and the SB-1000. SB is sealed, PB is ported. I read sealed works better for music in smaller spaces; ported better in larger spaces and for movies.

@Cryptowolf of course, "better" is all relative. I'm not a HUGE basshead, so I think the SB-1000 will kick ass for whatever I throw at it given my space and tastes! Prolly more bass than I could ever need!

I am spoiled for bass. I have a SB-1000 for movies and an Omega 2.1 system with an 8" sub for music. That said, I'm saving up for a BWC system eventually.

Was thinking about replacing Polk RT25i, but with sub, they are kinda fun. Will improve w/Vidar and passive pre? Will know in few weeks.

I have a sneaking suspicion that Vidar + sub (low gain) + RT25i will preclude the need for new speakers on secondary system.

I don't, but I noticed they're a subsidiary of Rolls, and based on the one Rolls product I've used (a reach, I know) I'd expect a sturdy build but mid-fi-ish quality otherwise. Would be nice if it's a sleeper brand tho.

try a software program that analyses the peaks and reduces the volume to the output file. I use one that is no longer available but there should be some more out there. You would be amazed at how many albums have intersample over zero peaks.

Or you can just lower the volume digitally in the player software by 1db or 2db prior to it getting to the dac and achieve the same thing.

My colleague, who worked at Bell Labs for 26 years, cited internal reserach where their threshold of concern began at 80 to 82 dB SPL. I've always preferred 73 average 83 peak for 2 channel, and 68 avg to 78 peak for headphone listening.

I use a dac with a built in volume encoder, not sure if it is digital or analog. What I can say is it is more transparent, neutral, and dynamic compared to one of the best pres I have tried and owned (14 yrs), a deHavilland UltraVerve 6SN7 pre with Goldpoint volume control.
