Places I've already ruled out: No NJ or most of NY. No to most of FL or any locale where it's really hot + humid for a significant portion of the year (Houston / New Orleans level is still bearable). Probably no to New England and the rust belt states.
My hobbies and interests are also coincidentally conflicting so that won't be a huge deciding factor for me.
I'm considering the same, probably 5+ years in the future. I really liked New York until humidity hit, that was a big NOPE for me.
Places I would consider: Oregon, Washington, New Mexico, Humbolt area in CA. I also enjoy the SF Bay Area but that should increase your cost of living.
I still need to visit New Mexico, my girlfriend loves it there. She hates gloomy skies so Oregon and Washington are vetoed.
My list is definitely oriented around being a weather wimp. Portland and Seattle rain is pretty mild so I wouldn't mind and I don't care about sun all the time, I'm originally from LA and am bored with sunshine.
Maine is really nice, just be careful on the winters and druggies. I would say Jax, FL but there isn't much that would make you say I like this (at least Jax is the least crazy than the other FL cities). I think Houston/NO has worse humidity than NE FL thou.
As someone who lived in New Orleans for a good long while - and elsewhere in the swampy gulf south - I can't imagine there'd be many places more humid - except for FL, of course.
New Mexico is beautiful, no humidity. Check out at least Albuquerque and Santa Fe; different vibes. Actually, ABQ has different vibes in different parts. And the food is awesome.
Thanks for the replies so far.
NO + Houston was bad yes, but not worse than the times I've been to the greater Miami / FtLauderdale area or Orlando. I don't have enough experience with the rest of FL in my adult life but based on childhood visits I can't see myself in these area long term (no offense or disrespect to FL members)
@Azimuth - What do you not like about Nashville? I know some people are / have been moving there from elsewhere and it wasn't too bad the 1 time I went a few years ago. Not sure how economics and "daily life" outlook is there though.
@Syzygy - Both of those cities in NM + Taos are already on the list for this fall if COVID doesn't blow back up, etc.
I just say it out for a cheap laugh. It seems the population growth is exploding everywhere here. You can tell by the pop up of new mattress stores here in every other shopping center. It is actually quite a fun city with plenty to do, it is just because of growth the housing prices keep going up and traffic seems to get worse and worse.
