Matsushita/ National? Think they had Mullard equipment in japan to build those.

Matsushita made the 7DJ8, heater rating is 7 volts but can be used as a 6DJ8 substitute. Mullard set up the factory in Japan for them. Supposed to sound good.

May be Toshiba or Raytheon Japan as well - not 100% sure if they didn't just sub out to Matsushita / National though.

Could also be a "wrong tube in a wrong box" - I have a unlabeled / unknown tube that I actually really like on BH Crack.

Yes, @Ti_Leo I think you're right, which would mean there's nothing Japanese about them.

I normally listen with Raytheon, or much higher grade Russian 6n3p-DR, and am surprised how pleasant this specific 'Japan' pair are.

They are Voshkod 6N23s, often listed as 6H23. They're equivalent to the 6922 (premium 6DJ8) and are exceptional compared to most Voshkod products.

@Ti_Leo @ogodei thanks both. I guess this reinforces my sense that the best tubes are Russian military grade. Just ordered a bunch more 6n3p-e's.

Russian military grade are often better than 'base' versions of the same tube but don't often get ranked 'best' on the internets. Very good for the value though

@ogodei They don't have the romance of windmill getters, black plates, etched glass, obscure plants and the like. They're all about performance and reliability.

@ogodei does the "-EB" suffix means military grade? Or just longer life time? I saw some 6n23p-EB tubes, but I don't whether they sound better.

-EB (or -EV or -I) on Russian tubes indicates extended service life, low noise & microphonics. Usually there are structural differences from the base tube (e.g., 'military grade' build) but sometimes they just stamp the tubes that measured the best.

DR are the most extreme. Rated for 10,000+hours, rugged and nuclear radiation shielded.
