The Beatles could easily be mistaken for an American band. Same with Led Zeppelin. But there are exceptions. The lead singer of Elbow
has a noticeable English accent when singing.
I have often wondered at this question. I am not sure about the Beatles being the best example however, as very often (not all the time of course) Paul or John do come across with an accent to my ears, more so than say all the Brits who were on the radio when I was in my teens in the 80's...
