I love The Onion :). They missed a point, though: if I understand it correctly, it is slave labour, as none of those people being forced to do stuff is paid. Strictly amateur. ;)
I don't watch the Olympics, as I have little interest in sports and competition, but I have been looking at the the daily round-up of pictures on one news source. The photography is amazing.
It would only be slave labor if they were forced or coerced to do it. Many of them pour themselves into it and make money through sponsorships. I know you have a winky face there but I’m not sure if maybe some of the statement was partially serious. :P
@Thad E Ginathom One photographer who is there now who was a big influence on me when I was learning is Joe McNally. He used to do a lot of photography for National Geographic. I got to attend a workshop once with him. Now he seems to spend most of his time making Nikon ads.

I don't know whose pics I'm seeing in Britain's The Guardian, but the swimming ones are amazing, and there is some fantastic multiple-exposure work too: fencing seems to suit.
